Purchase advice
Hi, I am new to this forum and I am looking into purchasing a Rolex from the classified section here. I realized that there are well known sellers and some not so well known. What's the ideal way to go about purchasing from a seller here? Thank you.

TRF is not a sales site..
You are not purchasing anything from the "site". As detailed in the guidelines posted in our For Sale Boards, it is a convenience for members who have a watch for sale and a member who is looking to buy. All transactions are to be done by pm between the buyer and seller. All of them may have different requirements or desires - ask them; they will be happy to work with you.

It seems like the method of payment is either wire transfer or paypal+fees. Paypal I get, but how do you protect yourself if it's a wire transfer.

There are very reputable sellers with great sales histories behind them, and there are others like me for whom it is the 1st time, even though I am very honest can't vouch for any other that I don't know, and in your place with a first time or almost seller, would ask for a face to face meeting, at an AD of the brand in question to get authentication if you are not an expert, I am selling 2 and am asking a face to face deal with the buyer, not expecting anything from TRF as 99% of the members are from US or at least not from the EU, some AD's do it for free, my Rolex AD in Paris does it for free, but they know me 25 years, not sure they do the same for everyone, some ask for a fee, which is the buyer who needs to pay. Good luck for your buy. Can advise you David SW, he has outstanding general opinion here, not on this forum in US is www.bernardwatch.com, just ordered a Blancpain from him, searching on the net I found that he has an excellent reputation, if you were in Europe I could give you a few great grey dealers but in the States apart from David SW and bernardwatch don't know any, you should post a new thread about "best grey dealers for (brand you want to buy)", many members will be happy to help you with this, it's one of them who put me on to bernardwatch because he knew what Blancpain I wanted, and I thank him immensely since with shipping and VAT for entry into Europe I am getting a watch in new condition for 9.900 euros instead of 11.700 euros, which was the best deal I found in Europe or anywhere else for that matter, and also in better condition. Also with internet you will find many sites where buyers talk about their experience with this or that dealer, I made a search for bernardwatch and all were unanimous about 1 thing that they were excellent for everything except 1 thing buying from you watches, but for selling they seem to be great, which made me go ahead as this is the 1st time I buy a watch without a face to face deal good luck with your purchase, please post a new thread with pics when you get it, one of the things TRF members prefer is a new thread about a member getting a new watch with pics

I had the same concerns. With my first Rolex, I wanted it NOW and didn't want to spend time researching it. My second Rolex, I had spent a year on TRF and did enough research where I felt comfortable buying from a trusted seller. I bought a sub-c from davidsw and would buy from him again.
That being said, there is NO protection if you wire money. So you really better be comfortable buying from whoever. If you buy from a seller here, you can save several thousands depending on the dealer, model, popularity. That is the biggest draw to buying to a seller here. The biggest disadvantage is that there is no 100% guarantee that what you buy is real, isn't tampered with, or not stolen compared to buying from an authorized dealer. Other things to think about are getting an appraisal (if you want insurance) and resizing the bracelet (you can DIY or go to any jeweler to get that done. However depending on your relationship with them, you may have to pay extra for this, where if you buy from a dealer, this will all be thrown in for free. Buying from an authorized dealer will guarantee 100% that you are getting a real Rolex. That's the biggest advantage. Usually you will have to pay more, but this is not always the case and it's not always thousands more. My first Rolex was a few hundred more from the dealer and my second Rolex was $2000 more from the dealer. And this is the biggest disadvantage. There is no wrong way and you have to go with your gut- if you are uncomfortable buying for a seller, that's fine. Don't let everybody here push you into doing something you don't feel comfortable doing. |

Thanks everyone, really appreciate all your help. Yes I've been checking out the Who's Who and Watch Out sections. Also pulling up, and reading past posts from sellers. There were just questions about small time sellers, and wire transfer that I couldn't find enough info on.

The one protection you have from a trusted seller here is this forum. If you have a problem you can post a thread here so I'm sure the seller would make things right rather than have his reputation take a beating.

If I may, I have bought and sold 2 different Rolexes from www.Goldwatchco.com
Dennis and his crew are 100% trustworthy. Overnight insured delivery included in price and they are very reasonable. |

Before I purchased a Rolex from DavidSW, I read all the reviews I could about him. It was a flawless transaction without any problems and a fast delivery.
