Rolex Hybrid: Explorer II/GMT Master

Just found this combination - 1655 with a 1675 dial to make this more legible. This was commissioned by Rolex in 1979 for British Explorer Oliver Shepard to circumnavigate the globe from the north to the south pole.

Haven't seen anything like this. It was auctioned off in 2005.

I thought you were going to tell us that the bezel broke on your GMT Master and now won't turn. ng:

That is a very cool find. Thank you for sharing.

I would say the hands from the GMT Master made it more legible to my eyes. The big orange 24-hr hand of the 1655 was so drastically different back then that many people could mis-read the correct time.

Yeah. I read about that one a few years ago. I want to say the dial was requested because of enhanced readability by the team.

I want to say there were 6 or 7 of these made for the expedition. I believe that one went for about 35K, but I'd have to research to be sure.

Well, it must have been a good idea, because it looks a lot like this.

Agreed. Coincidentally the 16550 was introduced in 1983. Not long after the 1979-1982 expedition.
