Vintage submariner query...

Evening all,

Long time lurker, first time poster. I've been given my uncles old watch which, I believe, is an old submariner from 60's/70's. I've also got the original Rolex paperwork and a few servicing receipts from a dealer in London. But when I've gone to have a look at the serial/model numbers to accurately date it there is nothing between the lugs??? So it's got me a bit puzzled a) whether it's fake or not and b) how old it is. I've no problems whether it is or not as he did inhabit some shades parts of the world and he was a deep sea diver working in the oil industry.

It needs a service (seems to run fast) as it hasn't been done in ages plus it needs a new crystal and a bit of fettling, it's just whether I'll get it back if it's a fake.

Here's a few pics for info...

Couple more pics added

Thanks in advance,
Dave

Vintage submariner query...

If you look in a loop at different angles it should be readable, just very faint

Looks like a serif dial 5513 from 72ish? Just my guess though...

Its a nice watch...get it serviced and water sealed and it will service you well. Looks like the hands were changed and its well worn, but otherwise looks great. Insert and bracelet appear original and dial looks very nice. Can you post close ups of the dial?

Haha thanks for that cajuntiger, I've just been having a look at that.

Plan is to get it serviced (new crystal and strap) and use it, it's a watch I can be proud of in more was than 1!!!

Thanks,
D

Looks like the case has been bead blasted so much of it's markings are obliterated..

Take the caseback off and much of the information you seek will be inside..

Under magnification, you can read the last three digits in the serial number - between the lugs on the 6 o'clock side of the watch. I can read the digits 676. Also, it sure looks like someone placed a protective piece of tape over the serial number.

Below is a screen shot.

As others before have said, the watch appears to be authentic. The dial is a serif dial, which if original to the case would put it in the early/mid 70's. I would not be concerned about authenticity because you can't see the serial number. The case has honest wear as evidenced by the the wear to the inside of the lug tips and the case sides. Enjoy and wear it in good health.

Just curious...will RSC be able to look up the case serial number by matching it to the movement number?

Thanks for the posts guys, I did wonder whether I could see some numbers but wasn't sure. I'll see if I can get the back off (without forcing it) and see what info I can glean.

Wow!....a genuine Serif dial.
I say this not so much for you, but for all those sellers who think ANY sort of tail on a plot marker makes it a Serif dial.

If you don't have the equipment perhaps leave opening it to the pros. Nice watch.

Since you have the original Rolex paperwork and a few service receipts surely the model and serial # are there?
