Wifey's birthday dinner

So after my Skype chat with JJ, Velitsko and Steve, my wife, son and I met up with her parents and brother for dinner. She wanted to go to the Rainforest Cafe, so my son would have some visual distractions, and the previous week we promised him we would go, but the line was 1:45 to get seated. So we had reservations for last night. My son has a cold, so he's not looking his best.

Afterwards, we retired to the in-laws for cake and presents!

It was a fun evening. Thanks for looking!

Fab pics. Your wife and family look great...I'm keeping the pic of you hidden from my missus tho...I can't cope with her swooning at your "movie-star" looks.

Seriously...we would be honoured if you could wish your wife a belated very happy birthday from Claire, William and Jim Lewis in bloody freezing England!!!!!!!

Thank Jim, I'll pass on your warm wishes! But I doubt England is colder than Minnesota in March!

David you're probably right.

It just feels a lot colder...England can be a depressing place in late winter.

Cold, grey, wet and dark...that's just the summer months!

I think I'd better have another beer!!!!!!

Wine warms you up more than beer Jim!

See if you can track some of this down - it's one of my favorites:

Californian my good man?????

Getting a decent bottle of Cali wine in the UK would be like finding a SS Cos and a MG GV on a two for one deal.

It seems that all the best American wines are consumed by well, Americans.

Sometimes a mega hyped bottle of Cali vino makes it to the locality...such as a Screaming Eagle etc but you have to pay Petrus or Angelus premiums for it and I would rather go with the "Old World" for that kind of money.

Zinfandel is a bit hit and miss here but then we only get the Supermarket fodder such as Gallo etc.

On a personal note, my fave is Rioja...anything 94 -95 especially La Rioja Alta or Castillo Ygay. You ever see one of those, snap them up...great wine for great food! One day I may even pull the trigger on a bottle of my grail wine...Artardi El Pison...at $250 a bottle thats a little steep for me...although it does seem to be coming down lately.

As for the beer...good old english ale warms you up...not like those American beers you guys have. I'll have to post you a few at some point!!!!!

Sorry it's so tough to get good CA wines. But there are some outstanding French and Spanish, as you mention. I too like Alta Riojas. An Italian Primitivo is somewhat similar to a California Zinfandel (same grape genetically, but different terroir and vinting).

Maybe you haven't heard, but there was a beer renaissance here about 20 years ago! Over 1400 breweries in the U.S. now, a large portion of which specialize in high quality "craft beers." I haven't had a piss-water American beer in years. Ales, porters or full-bodied lagers for me too.

WTG John.

Don't get me wrong, on a hot sunny day spent on the decking, nothing beats an ice cold lager...unfortunatley those days are few and few between.

When it's cold and dark outside, a good, dark, draught beer in a pint glass in front of a roaring pub fire can be heaven. Add that to a local fisherman's pie or something traditional and homely and you have a perfect winter's Sunday afternoon coastal pub going adventure!!!!

John

I'd forgotten about Guinness.

Best place I'd ever had a Guinness was at the Storehouse in Dublin (figures!!!). They even pull each pint and form a shamrock on the head with a nozzle....awesome!

PS my wife drinks Guinness and Tia Maria...classy girl...rofl!!!!!!!
She'd drink me under the table any day!!!!!
