Upgrading in Stages.. good idea?

Hey All,

So I've been going back and forth on this.. I have an AP Dual Time 39mm that I'm looking to trade and will get roughly 11-11.5k on trade. Now I'm in LOVE with the Patek 5712r... but at $41k roughly its a BIG step up. My question is I've never owned a ROLEX and as a lot of you know from earlier posts I love the idea of the Rose Skydweller on Strap or even the White Gold Daytona MOP Dial with Black Strap OR on White Gold Bracelet. These can be had for about $23k-27k depending.

My question is I have my 30th Birthday in June next year which is a big occasion obviously and I KNOW at some stage im gonna get that Patek 5712r.. its done... but the question is should I buy the Rolex now... wear and enjoy that for 9months then use it as trade towards the Patek for my birthday?

Or just bite the bullet and go for the Patek now? Am I gonna lose much on getting the Rolex now and flipping it later on? Roughly how much?

Cheers guys as always appreciate the advice!! :)

It sounds like you would be settling for a Rolex. I would do the Patek first, and a Rolex later on if it still appeals to you.

I'd save and get what you really want. No sense in taking a hit on a resell unless you really get a great deal. If I was to spend 25k on a ROLEX I would make sure I really wanted it.

I waited a fairly long time before I purchased my 116619 cause I knew I'd never sell it and I really, really wanted it. I've flipped 6 in the last 3 years and I'm now happy with what I have. Next up is the 16570 Polar and the Plat Coke if it comes out. That would be it for me

Good luck

If you buy right you will probably lose very little on the Rolex, so I would do the step function approach.

I have a hard time hanging on to a watch so I do it all the time.

I understand where you are coming from. I too am interested in a 5712R or SS but then saw the 5980R today and now I want one of those. But I have another Rolex planned first and will look at a PP next year and worse case scenario if I still really want the 5980R in a year's time then I may sell something to get one but in the mean time I can enjoy a gorgeous watch on my wrist. The key is to buy smart at a good discount.

If you're going to upgrade again to what you truly want don't take any hits on any more trades. Just trade for what you want. Sounds like the SkyDweller is not really at the top of your list so just get the Patek and be happy for your birthday and not have to worry about trading for it later

Get the one you really want which is the 5712r ( stunning watch BTW). If you can then get it now. Prices may go up next year.

I would do some research on how the SKD and the Daytona do on resale and ask myself can I live with the hit you may take on the way to the Patek.

If you are concerned about the money I would skip the patek. Don't "overspend" as you won't enjoy it as you should.

This is I guess I dont mind taking a $1500-2000 hit on wearing watch for 9months... but if its gonna be in the $5k+ range.. that'd be a bit harder to take.

So the watch im looking at is this -

http://www.ebay.com/itm/ROLEX-18kt-W...p2054897.l4275

White Gold MOP Dial Daytona.. Retail $41,000 on there for $22,750... I could most probably use AP and Rolex Blue/Black as trade for it.. would you guess IM gonna lose a LOT of that $22,700 on the trade towards Patek?

Thanks for the input! :)

I got my 5712G today.... It is EPIC. I am speechless.

I also have a WG sky dweller. If I were you I would get exactly what you want when you can afford it, if you don't plan on having/keeping both.

I will still absolutely wear my sky dweller, but I can honestly say that even after one day, there is nothing like Patek. You read all these posts about perfectly Patek, blah, blah, blah.....( all of which I thought was crap)....well, it's all true and I am hooked.

JPS

All I can say is... good for you! You're not even 30 yet and you have that type of decision to make.

Wow I had to look up what a 5712g was... super nice!

Bleh I keep going between the Rolex and the Patek.. I know im gonna have the 5712r in my life at some stage.. but feel like something so BIG should be met with an occaision like my 30th birthday.. also I feel the white gold daytona flies a bit more under the radar for everyday where.

Thanks!

I can't hold onto cash I've put aside for watches, so I buy as I go. I recently decided to get a Patek 5167 Aquanaut (about $18,500USD used). I still need to save $4k. In the meantime I just bought my second choice Daytona SS. Now I'll need to sell it and the Explorer II, and add cash when I get there (if I still want the Aquanaut). Fortunately Rolex is fairly "liquid."

5980R

As for the OP don't settle get the 5712R if that is what you desire. You will get hurt with a Sky Dweller as their resale is not good! Get the one you want!
