Milgauss black dial discontinued?
Hi there,
There seems to be mixed views if the Milgauss black dial has been discontinued. Can anyone confirm for certain if this is correct? Thanks. |

I have been told by AD it has, and it no longer appears in the recent Rolex catalog.

Yes, discontinued. I've had four different ADs tell me this, and their store catalog no longer includes it. It's also no longer a dial option on the Rolex website.
Glad I already have mine. |

You should seriously pick one of these up if you don't already own one, Tom. It's one very amazing piece.

The Milgauss isn't high on my list of things to get or even watches to get, but the watch has grown on my quite a bit and the black dial is my favorite of the bunch.
They'll be available for years to come on the secondary market, so I doubt that there is any cause for panic. I look mostly at function for choosing my watches and I pretty much have all the bases covered at this point in terms of Rolex, except for a chronograph and it bothers me some that the Daytona does nothing for me at all. If I were to get a Milgauss, it would be a purely whimsical purchase based on novelty rather than function, as I don't have any problems with my watches becoming magnetized and never have. It is a nice watch, though, and the seconds-hand could be a conversation starter in the right crowd.

Grady, You raise an interest topic of conversation. In modern society is a watch helpful in the same way it was years ago? My perspective is that in modern society all the complications are essentially unneeded, and fact can be replaced for a fraction of the costs, i.e. with smartphone apps. In fact you go as far to say that a watch is very much an unnecessary purchase given that we can tell the time in many other ways these days.
For me, the desire for a quality timepiece serves two purpurses, 1) the desire for a beautiful looking timepiece, and 2) an appreciation for the way a watch is made and its complications. After all, let's face it, I can't imagine too many people really need to spend $$$$ to withstand magnetic fields of 1,000 gauss. |

Well, a watch may not be the necessity that it once was, but even with the time everywhere and on so many device, I still like to wear a watch, because the wrist a good place to have the time and I have come to appreciate the mechanicals again and I've fallen in love with Rolex and I'm developing a taste for vintage watches and on and on.
Certainly, my cell phone does everything any watch can do and I do use those features a lot, but the smartphone will never replace the watch on my wrist. For most of us here, watches are one of life's little pleasures that can be indulged for anywhere from a few dollars to enough buy a condo in Manhattan.

It's peculiar that the cell phone is somehow considered a replacement for the wristwatch. If having to retrieve a clock from one's pocket in order to tell the time is such a great idea, why did people ever stop carrying pocket watches? The whole point of a wristwatch is that it is strapped to one's wrist. |

Should be interesting to see what happens with this watch in the next 20 years. It never really got traction after its initial re-release.
