Rolex Storage

New to the board and I have a quick question… I just bought a new SS Submariner and I am thinking about saving my 1999 Rolex Date Engine Turned Bezel - Oyster Bracelet for my son. It will probably be about 4-6 years before he is ready. So, should I have it serviced and then put it in storage? Put it in storage and then service it prior to giving it to my son? Or would you not recommend putting it in storage at all? Thanks for any advice.

Welcome to TRF!

First, congrats on your SS Sub Date! Great all-round classic!

Cool idea to hand the DJ down to your son! I would just store the DJ and have it serviced just before he gets it. Remember that turnaround times is usually 3+ weeks, though, and could be more during peak months during summer and up to Christmas.

Enjoy your stay here and please post a pic of both your SS Sub Date and DJ.

Hi there, welcome aboard!

Rolex recommends servicing at 5 year intervals regardless of whether the watch has been worn or stored.

I'd suggest wearing the watch in your rotation and enjoying it for the next 5 years, then sending it in and having it renewed for your son.

There's no real reason to let it sit dormant for 5 years when you could be enjoying it.

Well if you are going to store any mechanical watch for a period of time just a small wind say once a month will be fine.Just to keep the tiny amount of oil around the bearing parts etc.

I'm with Al. Build a history with the watch. It'll be that much more special to him.
