new to the forums, looking for info
I hope this is the right spot, I apologize if it's not.
My grandfather recently passed, and from my mother and my uncle, they both agreed that he would have wanted me to have one of his wrist watches, I was reluctant to take it but upon the instance of both of them I did get a watch. The images attached are of the watch, sorry, using a cell phone so the images may not be too clear. the watch says rolex, oyster-perpetual. The band shows JB Champion Stainless Steel. I haven't opened it as I am waiting for my dad to return my watch repair tools. Will post more images when I get them back. The story that my mom and uncle told me is that, when he returned from the ww2, his father asked him what he wanted, and he said a watch of his choosing, and this was the watch he picked The serial number is hard to read on the back case, it is 248604 which would put it at 1942. Basically looking for any information on the history, real or fake. Either way, it has been wound once and has been keeping amazing time since I got it monday sept 1st 2014. Thank you in advance, and even if the watch turns out to be fake, I will still wear it with pride, as it was his. |

No reason to think that it is not authentic at first blush..
The dial has been refinished somewhere along the line and so the movement should be looked at to ensure that it is proper and well maintained..

Thanks. So I am guessing it should be water proof, and I am going to take it to a rolex dealer to be serviced. Should I insure it? And would it be wise to wear a 70 year old watch every day?

Rolex probably won't service it now, you'll need to find a good independent watchmaker. After it has been serviced and pressure tested (to make sure it is waterproof) there is no reason why you could not wear it every day. I am curious about the 'Selfwinding' font, it looks more modern than the rest of the watch.

The dial has been redone. Looks old, possibly done in the 60's. I would say the hands were either relumed or replaced.

I will have to wait to open it, and I will look for a decent watch maker who can service this for me. I could see my grandfather getting it serviced as it was something his father had gotten him. And is now something I cherish. I do thank you all for the comments, once I get the back open I will post pictures of the movement and dive deeper into trying to get the history of the watch.
