Confirm my 1966 Datejust 1600?
Newb to TRF...loving the vast amount of information so far!
I recently inheritated this from a family member, and am curious if it is indeed a Datejust 1600 'Wide Boy'? I'm going to take it to my local AD for servicing, but can I verify the year/model by removing the band myself? *The band is not a genuine Rolex band...I'm on the hunt for a genuine band. |

You should be able to remove the bracelet yourself if you have a tool to do so.
After you remove the bracelet one side of the watch should have a stamp 1600 and the other side the serial number from which you can determine the approximate year of manufacture. It looks like a nice 36mm piepan datejust

Looks good, I just bought a 1603 DJ from 1966. Yours doesn't appear to be a 'wide boy' though. You should be able to get the bracelet off with a wooden toothpick or similar.

Band removed and I discovered:
Datejust 1600 Serial 846,XXX meaning 1952 productions from what I could find online. So it's 14 years older than I thought. |

Can you explain what I'm missing? 4 different rolex serial number lookup sites state:
8xx,xxx is 1952 8,xxx,xxx is 1984 I have a 8xx,xxx. |

8xx.xxx belongs to 1962. From 1953 Rolex started again from 100.000. reference 1600 were produced from end of 50's to end of 70´s. nice watch you have. enjoy it.

It is not a wide boy but it is a very nice piepan dial.

The pic below is a 1600 Wideboy (not mine - image borrowed from the Net). You can see that the markers and hands are different from those in your photo.

So it's a 1962 Datejust 1600 Piepan dial?
Whats your thoughts on the best way to 'restore it'? I've been on the search for a accurate timeframe bracelet, but would it loose any value if I kept a non-Rolex braclet of my choice? Is there any commong things done to this era of Rolex? My plan is just to enjoy wearing it! |

So you think it's been modified?
Is it worth sending it to a RSC for inspection/verification? |

Not really a worthwhile cost unless you don't mind paying just for your curiosity.
Your watch seems to be well taken care of, even with the aftermarket bracelet and possibly refinished dial. Trying to find a proper era bracelet/dial may cost as much as the watch is worth and you would then have an old bracelet of questionable merit. (better pictures of the dial would be needed to determine if it has been refinished or is an original) Enjoy it before you decide that you want to make any changes to your nice family heirloom..

Enjoy it. I may get a new set if springbars and throw it on a nice croc or leather strap. But I like it as is too.
