Agreed. You will always get something from both sides (positive and negative). Just enjoy the ride each day, starting every morning with sliding it on your wrist. That is, if you are the type to actually take it off at night! LOL.

Welcome from a fellow newcomer! The Explorer looks right at home on your wrist and I also think it will fit right in with your lifestyle and field of work.

The Explorer is an understated and uncommon Rolex to come across in the wild and is not easily recognized as a Rolex and truly earns its nickname of "The Stealth Rolex". During my ownership it has never been recognized as a Rolex by friends and family and even colleagues who own Submariners who are no strangers to the Rolex brand.

Definitely an elegant and rugged all occasions time piece and is able to be your one and only watch for everyday wear.

Get the watch and enjoy it for the rest of your life as the grail watch which your loving wife bought you for your 40th birthday. Screw what anybody else thinks. As others have said, 99% of the people won't even know what you're wearing so it's a bit of a non issue.
Worst case scenario (and I wouldn't even feel the need to do this) you don't wear it to maybe a particular meeting and you enjoy it in every other moment of your life.
Don't not get the thing that will make you so happy because of what others might think of you. If they are friends and know you they will already know by now what type of person you are.
It's an amazing watch and perfect for ANY occasion, dressed up or dressed down.

Do it and don't waste another second contemplating it if it's what is going to make you happy. Life is way too short.

Go with your grail! Get the 214270. Otherwise, regret and persistent yearning will follow. You've put yourself in a position to have what you have wanted for a long time. Reward yourself and have a great 40th!

Buy what you love and don't settle for the cheaper one. You'll regret it.

Wear it and enjoy it without worries. You might be the only one who knows it is a Rolex.

Please help me pull the trigger on my first Rolex.

Enjoy your Explorer!

Buy it, wear it, enjoy it.

We should wear whatever watches we want and not worry what others might think.

I had a similar dilemma when I was looking at buying my next watch.

I wanted to get something that made me happy but did not shout I am wearing a Rolex.

I ended up with a Milgauss and I have warn it non-stop for a couple months now and was amazed at how well it has flown under the radar.

For me it was about recognizing all the hard work I have done to get where I am now and to treat myself, life is too short to not get the little things that can add joy to it.

I say go for it and don’t look back!

I'm glad you bought the watch you liked, wear it, enjoy it and don't feel guilty or try to hide it. You only live once!

I would not get it because it does not has a date. For me date is an important function of a luxury watch. Therefore, I opted for DJII full steel with black dial.

The other issue of yours is a problem, because when you buy a Rolex you are sending a message that you have enough money to spent on a piece of metal that offer nothing special but its brand. Therefore, think deeply before buying it if you are not going to wear it everyday.

Congratulations, it's a lovely piece and as many have said, very understated.

If you are still uncomfortable, dress it down on a black or green NATO. The bracelet is what marks it out as "rolex".

Don't wear your watch for others, wear it for yourself.

Good luck.

Good call! You obviously wanted the watch. I can say with some certainty that anything less would have left you unfulfilled. You scratched the itch. Worse comes to worse you're not comfortable wearing it to work. No biggie, then don't. For any number of reasons lots of guys here don't wear their good watches to work but then perhaps as a result enjoy them that much more on evenings out and on weekends. If you decide not to wear it daily, so what. Many of us have more than one Rolex so obviously they are not being worn daily either. Every morning you open the sock drawer and see it sitting there brings it's own kind of enjoyment and satisfaction. Trust me, it's worth it even when it's not on your wrist.

The Explorer is a great watch.

Your job doesn't own you does it??? Life is way to short to worry about that crap. Your wife feels you are worth it and that is all that should matter to you...
Buy the watch of your dreams and be happy. The Explorer sounds perfect for your lifestyle and it flys under the radar more than other sport models of Rolex.
Heck, if my wife would buy me a 18k Sub, I would wear it everyday while dishing free soup at the soup kitchen and smile every minute.

Wear it and enjoy every minute. Don't forget you can always wear long sleeves if you are particularly nervous about someone seeing it...

Ostentatious?

A Sky Dweller is ostentatious. A Gold Yachtmaster maybe...

Buy the watch. Buy the watch. Buy the watch.

Elanger,
You're going to love this watch. I rewarded myself with HRH's "permission" 2 years ago for my 40th. You're picture looks superb and we look forward to a few more in time.
It is exceptionally comfortable and very well balanced; not at all top heavy and disappears under shirt sleeves very easily. I too work for a (very large) not for profit organisation and there are a quite a number of Rolex wearers at work - I've yet to see another Explorer on anybody there. My close friends know what it is but nobody else really clocks it. The friends occasionally tease me but I remind them their latest car has probably dropped that much value in the last year. They know it's just my thing. A couple of female colleagues have said "nice watch, what is it?" but it really isn't something even some of the more "watch people" notice. A group of colleagues were stood round discussing their Seamaster Pros recently and I was among them asking them this and that about the finer details, timekeeping, comfort of bracelet etc. Not once did anybody make any reference to my Explorer, ask any questions - nothing. The ultra-robust movement will suit your activities very well too. The matt dial is a stunner, particularly in natural light and the watch is very legible with a beautiful, well spaced minute chapter. You couldn't really do any better... ENJOY!
Best regards,
