I've wanted to point to someone's watch and ask if it's stolen.

I have on occasion especially at out neighborhood watering hole. Had discussions about a '70s GMT Pepsi, an IWC and various other Rolexes. It's a friendly place in a relatively touristy island with an eclectic bunch of permanent residents as well. The watering hole is the unofficial town hall. As a matter of fact, just yesterday, my neighbor with the '70s GMT got to check out my new 114060. Another neighbor of ours owns the fine establishment. It's around the corner from our home.

I dont but I would more likely do it if I was wearing my Patek or Piaget just so I dont look like a Rolex groupie. AS has been psoted many times Rolex more than any other brand has owners who were given their Rolex as a gift, so are not always "watch people"

I don't unless I was speaking to them already. It can be awkward to a stranger as I myself might feel a bit uncomfortable if a complete stranger commented on my watch. I have had a couple of friends comment recently on my sub.

Our Fedex guy wears a vintage Pepsi. I see him all the time but haven't asked him about it because it would make things weird.

I tend to not comment on Rolexes because most rolex wearers aren't enthusiasts.

That being said, I always comment on Pateks, panerais, APs, etc

Will be in FT Lauderdale 26th of July, cant wait and it even more so that it's not a business trip! :)

I did this and it backfired on me the other day when the person who was showing me their datejust which was on a leather strap turned out to be fake!

I carried on saying to pretend not to notice the watch was fake but slowly cut the conversation shot

I was in the store the other day, buying groceries. The store checkout guy was wearing a Two-tone GMT master ii. I complemented him, i said, "Nice watch" to which he responded, "thank you, i have worked very hard and long to own this watch"..

To which, I took my leave.. I thought that this was a kind conversation, and I could see how enlightened he became after my comment.. You could say, it made his day.

Every great once in a while, typically with not much response. One time however, I asked an elderly client about his Pepsi GMT. He told me he purchased it while stationed overseas during the Vietnam war....Stated he wore it in combat and during two helicopter crashes in LZ's....After that, he never takes it off, fascinating stuff.

Funny...I thought of this thread as I just met the bank manager of my local branch this morning. She was wearing a new 36MM DJ on PCL Oyster bracelet with roman numeral dial. It was really a great looking watch and I wanted to compliment her on it, but didn't for fear of awkwardness. Oh well!

I work in retail any time I see a nice watch, I always like to at least say something, even if it's general like "nice watch," but if it is something rare and vintage, I'll tend to mention the model or reference to see if they'll catch on - most do and usually leads to a great interaction.

Agree with the earlier point. If I was already speaking to them, I would. Otherwise, I wouldn't.

I always notice people's watches but very rarely comment on them however I was at my doctors a few weeks ago and I noticed he had a two tone GMT ii on and literally as I was about to compliment him on his watch he turned to me and said " I hope you don't mind me saying but I noticed your watch when you came in and it is beautiful".

He then asked to see my watch and complimented me on it and what good condition it was in given I had told him it's age (1967) I then said to him that I had noticed his watch and was just about to comment on it when he got in there first.

He ended his examination and then we ended up sitting talking about watches for a good 15-20 minutes.

Always nice to get a compliment on your watch and to talk about about watches with another enthusiast.

I know, I know...cool story bro and all of that but I thought it was pretty cool.

My lady friend was talking to a guy in line behind us at Safeway the other week who was wearing a BLNR. He was glancing at my TOG at the same time, but neither of us said a word about them.

Only if we are talking about something else or if its a true WIS piece. By that I mean like a vintage piece or something really cool like that.

But usually the vast majority of rolex owners dont give a damn about the watch, and they probably dont remember the reference number if you asked them.

They bought it because its either a Rolex, they liked the look, or its blingy enough for them to make a statement.

Not to get roasted but that is my experience. Us WIS are a VERY limited bunch.

Guy bought a 30k skydweller from me at my house and said, "this is like a sub right?"

HOWEVER

I comment often on Pateks, AP and VC or niche brands like that. I get very good response.

Yes I have commented. Sometimes it goes well and sometimes not. I was wearing a nice-brand when I commented on a guy's Sea Dweller and he let me try it on! We were in a bar so maybe that had something to do with it!

Was working an off duty security detail last week, and I noticed a guest wearing a pepsi GMT. We talked for a bit. He then pointed out his wife who was wearing a DJ. I was wearing an AK which he didn't comment about. He probably thought it was a Seiko.
