Hi everyone....I'm on the hunt for a 5512. I've located what seems to be a nice watch (1.5mm serial #) recently services by Rolex. The problem is that it has a feet first 2 line dial. The seller stated that it was probably changed out at a service in the 70s....as it is clearly a 5513 dial, wouldn't Rolex today have either refused to service it or replaced it with a current 5513 service dial? Also, percentage wise, what kind of adjustment would you make on this watch price wise?

Also, while it seems that 5513/2 with the wrong number service caseback aren't a big deal...is the wrong dial a deal breaker?

A great deal of the vintage value is in the dial. Post some pics and we can give you a more informed answer

early 5512's had two line dial

I know that early 5512 had 2 line dials, but this one has a feet first mid 70s 5513 dial. I am not against this as I believe I can always go to Rolex to have a proper 5512 service dial installed...my question is how much should I deduct from my offer given that it has the wrong dial? Btw, the seller admits that it is the wrong dial and said that they were told that back in the day, they would just mix the dials. I believe the sellers belief, but in the mid 70s, a 5512 and 5513 were different dials.

So here is a picture of the watch...I think it is beautiful, and my only real question for discussion is that given that it has an incorrect dial, how much should I adjust my offer price? I have asked for additional pictures, namely the crown guards, and of course in between the lugs to verify the serial number and such. It is a 1.5MM watch, so it should probably be either gilt dial or at the least a meters first 5512.



So, given that the dial isn't right...and assuming everything else is (SN, 100% Rolex), and I a want a proper 5512, what percent would you deduct from the price of a proper 5512 with the right dial?

I should say that I am sort of OK with the dial, but just don't think that I should pay the same price as I would if it had a 5512 dial.

Maybe simple answer, if the movement is a cal 1520 then it's a 5513 and the dial is def later than 1.5mm

Unless the piece can be had for an extremely good deal I would take the advice of the experts on this site...You will not get steered in the wrong direction on here.

Honestly I really want one with a lumi dial and hands...best of both worlds in my opinion....based on what I am hearing I will probably walk away😚. Thanks guys!

Yeah, initially you might feel that you let one get away (especially if the seller is offering it at low-ish price), but ultimately I think you'd regret buying this particular watch. Be patient and something better will inevitably come your way.

Pass...that's just an OLD, cobbled together Rolex....NOT a FINE Vintage Piece by any measure.

I have to agree with you, provided that he does not pay a premium for something he does not get. I would use it as a watch too, not paying any attention to the "vintage" detail.

Generally when the wrong dial or parts are installed it indicates something...its a red flag. Bottom line, if you like it then buy it. But if your intent is to buy a vintage 5512, then you can do much better than this.

Yes, you are correct. I overlooked the part he was hunting for a 5512 specifically.
