Gmt vs yachtmaster
Hi all. Hello from sunny South Africa!
Currently amongst my Tag Heuers and Breitlings, a colt and super avenger, I have a 2013 deepsea. I recently acquired a mint 2001 16710 sub . My intention is to flip all the Tags, and perhaps the Breits, and get a black tool watch for the rough outdoors, and a rolex smaller than the Deepsea for a daily watch. Now the 16710 I bought as I got it at a bargain, complete box and papers, serviced etc. it does still have a slight vintage feel which is not really my style. I have a great offer on it which will give me a quick thirty percent profit. I previously had a newish ceramic gmt which I traded in on the deepsea. I found that the steel bracelet with middle polished sections gave it a bit more cachet than the normal brushed steel of the subs. However, this highly polished sections do show fine scratches rather easily, and it's usually a mission to mask off all the brushed portions before taking a cape cod to the polished sections. Now, assume I sell the 16710. I could add in about 1000usd and get a no date ceramic sub, which will just look like a smaller version of the deepsea. A nice used yachtmaster has also caught my eye. One again, this yachtmaster with steel platinum combo bracelet has middle polished sections in platinum which I find attractive. Also, the numbers on the bezel have the high polish which can catch the light quite nicely at times. Would the platinum be any more resistant to the fine daily scratches? Thanks in advance! Doc. |

Not sure I understand the GMT v. YM question. You said you have a 16710 that doesn't suit your fancy and had a ceramic GMT that you flipped because you didn't like the PCL's. It doesn't sound like the GMT is for you and I'm doubtful about the YM as it also has PCL's.
If you want a time zone watch that comes from the factory with brushed center links take a look at the Explorer II. Your choice of white or black dial.

16710 is a gmt.
The only platinum in the YM is the bezel. Great watch. They all are. Find the one you like the best.

Yes the YM would be a great addition and companion to the DSSD

Sorry for the confusion. I apologise profusely.
First mistake, the watch i recently bought was an 2001 older 16610 with lug holes. That's the one that feels vintage. I was of the opinion that there was platinum on the bracelet of the yachmaster. I only had a gmt, a newer ceramic type with green gmt hand. I was wanting to know whether the pcls would be more scratch resistant on the yachmaster compared to the gmt. But if i am wrong about the materials, that is the steel vs platinum pcls, then my question would be irrelevant. Sent from my Z10 using Tapatalk 2 |

As a point of information though, I believe platinum and steel are fairly close on the Mohs scale of hardness. So I wouldn't expect too much difference in scratch resistance.

The YM is so different and would be a great addition. It wears most comfortable and in the sun light a real shiner.
The bracelet is of the same material as the GMT PCL, only the bezel and dial are of Pt. Bezel holds up well as does my bracelet. ![]() (Small micro scratches doesn't bother me)

Actually a 16710 would make a nicer choice imho than a YM.

I would too, except the OP seems to be worried about scratches on polished sections. Well, the YM has even more of those...including the whole case.
I'm two weeks into having my new YM, love it, and Im not worried about the scratches that will come. Had a 16710 for years, and still love it too. OP, I'd say get a new Sub or Explorer. Or, you could get something you mentioned and brush the PCLs so as not to worry.
