Depends on the exposure to sunlight. They do fade, because the paint had not enough UV protection. Its normal, but if the quality control was more strict, it should not.

In industry, when colors are involved that need to last for long, they do some "ageing tests" of color samples in a controlled environment,"ageing chamber", where the conditions to be faced in 5-10-15 etc years are simulated within days or weeks. This way the required % of UV protection is determined. Here,....hm, they did not !!

PS There are "sun zones" that determine the exposure. Its different, eg to the pole, in Germany, or south Greece or Africa. Therefore, some samples from sunny countries are always more faded than the ones from eg England or Sweden ( Jocke ? ).

Fading, how much and the nature of the color shift, depends on the vintage and I suppose the type and frequency of exposure to the elements. You'll see all kinds of shades and hues if you'll peruse the forum for examples of GMT inserts. I purchased my GMT in Jan. 1971 and in about 1980 lost the bezel, only to find it a few years later in my flower bed. By that time I had purchased another from an AD. From then on the original stayed inside in a drawer away from the sun, until recently when I replaced it to its rightful location.

Notice that although the original (left) has faded much more overall, it has been on the watch <1/3 as long as the newer insert (right). At the time the watchmaker at the AD told me the newer inserts faded less than the older ones because of upgraded materials. For the last several months, in true WIS fashion, the newer bezel has been on my south-facing window pane collecting rays of direct sunlight most of the day in hopes it will fade more.
