GMT Master II Seal Falure, Cost to Repair?
I have the opportunity to purchase a GMT Master II that had a crown seal failure, the watch has stopped running.
Just based on experience, what is the average cost to get this up and running again? Obviously my incentive to purchase this is price, basically a "get rid of it" kind of deal. |

No clue of that, the sale is through a friend of a friend so I don't have specifics. the photo i did see looks like the dial hands and what not are in fine shape, though.
He did however say it would be 750-1000 to fix, and he was asking 3500 for it. It is a GMT II ceramic. |

don't know who he got the quote from but if that's it doesn't sound like too much damage, but he may not know for sure if it hasn't been taken apart.

That's an interesting price. Are the hands and dial ruined? From experience, anything can be fixed, but water damage is a tough one to gauge until the movement is torn apart for a real inspection.

If my guess is right, The watch in question is on craigslist in the milwaukee area. The seller does not have the paperwork for the watch. the listing states that an AD is willing to pay him 3500 for the watch and he is asking 3750 for a private party sale. Does not look like that everthing is okay with this watch

Even if you spent $1500 on it , it would still be a cheap watch . As per normal there's more to this vague story ;-)

Who knows what might be wrong with this watch? The OP sure doesn't know. Too much downside risk and no where near enough savings to balance that risk. I looked up the listing and I see that it is a ceramic model. That changes my answer slightly. I'd meet the seller at the AD and do two things: 1) Verify its authenticity 2) Get the AD to estimate a "not to exceed price" for repair. If you can come in at a reasonable total cost you could make this work. I still don't love this deal, but I suppose it might be viable. Just my ![]() Last edited by crew; 26 August 2014 at 06:35 AM.. You are taking a gamble. I agree with John that the purchase would be contingent on verification of authenticity and the service center providing a worst case scenario price for repair such as cost of replacing all moving parts of the movement, etc. If what the buyer wants plus that worst case repair cost is acceptable to you, do it. You will likely be happy when the watch is repaired and the price rings in lower than expected.

If an AD was really going to give him $3500 I doubt he would not have grabbed it rather than try to sell it privately just for an additional $250...

I would run from this deal! Doesn't make sense not to accept the AD offer to purchase.

I tried searching but didn't find an answer. Is it safe to swim with a GMT II?
