Mechanical watches are here to stay forever! Ill definitely be buying an apple watch just for working out since I bought the iPhone 6 plus and I have wireless earbuds... I can leave my huge phone in the car while i stream my music through my watch other than that back to my rolex >:D.

Even GPS receiver, solar powered (or kinetic powered), thermal compensated, super accurate, multi-functional quartz watches couldn't kill mechanical watches, so I don't see it happen with smart watches. Even if you squeeze thousands of useful functions in a smart watch, it will never replace even the least complicated mechanical watch (e.g. Sub 114060). Also, in the last 2 or so decades mechanical watches became a must-have accessory (in many cases jewellery) for many guys and gals, and smart watches will not be able to replace mechanical watches for that purpose for a while from now.

That's a lovely watch. I'd buy one.

As for smart watches killing off mechanical..... As already mentioned; quartz was supposed to do that.

Maybe we'll probably start wearing two watches! One smart and one mechanical.

I might pick one up. It is much more attractive than most of the fitness monitors out there and has the potential to be very useful. Also you forget the most important part...

Think there will always be an interest in mechanical watches - the mere fact that there is no electronics nor computers within them is good reason in itself for people to remain interested. Nice to see that advancing technology has not overtaken them!

I don't want to have to read something on a 1" screen. I would rather pull out my phone and read it. I'll keep my mechanical watches & pass them on for generations to come.

EMP?! Any EMP strong enough to kill iPhones, etc. is going to have me more worried about the attendant mushroom cloud than whether or not I'm right about the watch!

I think smartwatches are just a passing phase.
I mean, what does a smart watch do anyway. I can't properly surf the net with it, can't read my email properly on it, can't type a letter with it, so why will it do to my auto atic watch what the quartz watch failed to do? I have no desire whatsoever to own a smart watch. That was way different when the first mobile phones and smart phones and iPods came out.

I expect far more from any head up displays once they are more developped.

The Microsoft spot smart watches died with a massive whimper a few years back. They were limited but I think the same argument applies. What are you really going to want to do in a 48mm space or less?

This is the only reason I think Apple's has a chance. Historically, if they run with a product others have failed with- it succeeds.

This is the more interesting trend in my view (dont Think it will go anywhere, but should be interesting).

I was thinking of printing up some color case back stickers depicting exactly that 3120 movement... you know for those AP owners who don't have a display back?

I've fallen victim to the addiction which is the iPhone. Let's face it, these devices practically rule our lives. That's why I'll never surrender any body appendage or cavity to any type of wearable device. This just makes me appreciate my 'simple' watch movement more than ever.

Breitling and Omega, maybe.

Rolex, never.

TAG has already tossed their hat in the ring.

Smart watches will never displace mechanicals completely, just as quartz and digital never did.

No matter how they manage to spiff up smart watches, they will always be considered gauche in certain settings.

Now that Montblanc, of all companies, is getting ready to launch a smart strap, the likelihood of displacing luxury watches becomes even more unlikely.

I recently met with a group from JP Morgan's NY office. I found it interesting that the youngest guy (late 20's) was wearing a vintage mechanical watch. I didn't get a close look at it but across the table it looked to be a 40's or 50's vintage gold watch. Check out this article in the NY Times:

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/07/fa...anted=all&_r=0

There may be hope...

The smart watch is the future for personalized health related applications and "quantified self" programs. It only competes with mechanical watches for the real estate on your body. What the device will do is light years beyond time keeping.

I don't see these as a threat to watches. Soon enough the necessary sensors in the smartwatches will be small enough to fit in clothing.

A watch as with everything else is a statement. If you prefer a Rolex or Timex, it is a statement. Sure phones tell time as well as other functions. Generations appericate different things but timepieces span the generations. You can't give your old iPhone to your kids when they get older ( I guess you could but they would probably have to upgrade) mechanical watches endure because they are alive. Batteries and no moving parts is a robot not life. So to speak. Only an opinion. Having something someone you loved and remember or love now wore means so very much. Keep your iwatch. I'll keep my Sub,pass it on and live forever!

I agree, don't get me wrong. I just think that it will be in the form of a watch that competes with our Rolexes ;). I think that phase will pass, as you say, with new technology.
