For those of you who knows help me understand the "ticking of a rolex"

I am sure a lot of you folks on this forum would know this.

I notice ever since I got my first Rolex 20 years ago a Rolex ticks (sounds) different from other watches. It sound like a faster and crisper tick.

Can some of you help me understand (explain to me) the technical reason for that.

And more importantly is this unique to Rolex. Can you reliability spot a fake from using this method?

thanks

The second hand beats at 8 times per second giving the illusion of a sweeping hand. All mechanic movements operate like this, some are 10 times per second. You can hear it if you listen carefully enough. Rolex movements are very quiet though compared to an ETA movement used in many watch manufacturers movements.

As now most all movements now tick at 28800bph some tick lower 21,800 bph and the high beats at 36000bph.So all movements with say a 28800bph should sound the same. But that would depend on that persons hearing how close his ear was to the case.Plus the size,or the space left in the case with movement installed which would amplify the movement sound. So its doubtful you could tell the provenance of any watch just by the sound of the tick.

When I put a Rolex to my ear, initially the ticking sounds similar to my other watches. However if I listen more carefully, and press closer to my ear, there is a certain pinging hum on my Rolexes that I can't seem to hear on other watches. It's very enjoyable.

I hear the hum too. For this reason I can't sleep with the watch on under my pillow as it drives me nuts.

I agree that it "pings" more than other watches. It is pleasant. While it's certainly not a surefire way to authenticate a watch, I have used this technique once. I brought my 1675 along when I bought my 1530, which has the same movement; when I hold them up to my ears they sound exactly the same.

I saw these posted elsewhere, but clearly illustrates the "pinging" heard in a Rolex movement.

28,800 BPH equates to 8 BPS. Count 'em:

I think Larry Tools took this one originally

I like the unique sound of the 3135 under the pillow in the quiet of the night. Relaxing.

I find it makes a distinct sound for 30 seconds and then a separate note for the next 30 seconds, repeating every minute. Trust me.

Other watches at 28,800 bph do not sound the same. Nor my 36000 bph Seiko which lacks the 'ping'.

rolex actually sounds way softer than other watch manufacturers.. I have a panerai, and I must say, that one ticks really loud!
