Problems with my new Speedy Pro
Hi Folks,
I'm new to the forum and a new WIS so I figured I could ask you guys for advice. I purchased my first nice watch a little over 1 month ago as a present to myself for turning 40 and it was an Omega Speedmaster Pro. Up until a few days ago I've been thrilled with the watch...it keeps time to perfection and I have not been able to notice it losing or gaining even 1 second per day. However the chronograph stopped on me a couple times starting a few days ago. I had to reset it with several clicks of the buttons to get it working again. And now when I reset the Chronograph it unreliably resets in different places each time. This happens not only with the large second hand but also with the small minute counter on the right side of the dial. Sometimes they reset at the 1'clock position, sometimes the 11'oclock position...but never at 12'oclock where they are supposed to. I'm quite frustrated over this. I splurged on this watch and bought it brand new (I know I'm probably a sucker) at the Omega Boutique in NYC...I live in NYC. Paying almost 6k for this watch 1month ago and now having to travel all the way uptown on my lunch break (a 45 min subway ride each way) only 1 month later to have it fixed is really pissing me off. Obviously the watch is well under warranty. But I'm more upset because I'm questioning if this is just the beginning of the time, effort and money associated with owning an expensive mechanical timepiece. Or did I just get a lemon? If so do you think there's any chance in hell the Omega Boutique will exchange it or do I just have bring my $6k 1month old watch in for repairs. If that's the case I'm starting to regret my choice. I would appreciate any insight on this. Thanks |

Definitely bring it back to the boutique and have them take a look at it. Or you may want to call Omega CS in Secaucus and explain what is happening.
Sorry to say this but most likely they will repair it. If they do, it will be sent to Secaucus for the repair.

Difficult to say what's wrong, but assuming the power reserve on the mainspring is sufficient, the seconds hand may not be completely tight on the pinion. I had issues with the hour counter on my ROC and they replaced the seconds hand (thread in AP section here). Whatever the cause, I'd think that the boutiques would be very good in terms of customer service. In the end, you will have a perfectly functioning watch but it may take some time.

Loose chronograph and minute counter hand are possible but unlikely.. might be a loose dial screw floating around the movement. Definitely bring it into the boutique. If you purchased your watch there, they will do their best to make it right.

If the magic has gone from that particular watch ask them to change it.

Had an issue with my speedy a few months after purchase too. No big deal, warranty covered it and works like new. Goes along with owning a mechanical watch. Had a similar issue with a sub not keeping time. It can happen and you deal with it. I never regretted either purchase.

Just a quick update for those that were kind enough to respond...So I took my Speedy to the Omega Boutique in NYC where I bot it and I told them that I would like to replace it with a new one given the malfunctioning chronograph and fact that I bot it only 4 weeks ago. The took the watch in for service and told me that they found a speck of dust or particle which was not allowing the "hammer" to reset properly thus causing the second and minute counter of the chronograph to reset all over the place. The told me that there was nothing wrong the watch...BUT...they would be happy to replace it with a new one given that it was only 4 weeks old and they did want me to be happy and maintain their brand reputation ect...I was pretty thrilled. Especially because I've dinged up the watch quite a bit in a month of wearing it so now I get a new watch which I will try and be much more careful with. I can't believe they replaced it but I think it was the right thing to do...Yeah for Omega customer service.

Glad it is all sorted out. I mean if you paid for retail, replacing it is the least of their concerns if it is right. They will probably break down the piece and use it for repair parts if anything. Enjoy!

I've had multiple Speedmaster Pro's (different ltd editions) from new with faults and issues, in the end I stopped buying.
YMMV but ime it is common for them to have faults from new. I wish I'd gotten the same level of customer service that the OP here got although mine were from an AD not the Omega boutique. |

The only "common" issue with the speedy are the dial screws. Particularly, the one closest to the start/stop pusher. The vibration from using the pusher sometimes cause the screw to work itself loose and that causes various issues. Mostly, blocking the operating lever. Pretty durable movement afaik. |

The big problem with so many high end watches, you just don't know how long it sat in the display case. I too had a SMP that needed service within the first three months.

That's the beauty of buying in a boutique. They will usually go out of their way to make it right. Speedy's are very reliable for the most part. I doubt you'll have any other issues in the future. Enjoy.
