If you want him to wear a Rolex and be complimented for it (which would remind him of your favor more often), go for the bolder more professional Sea Dweller; He doesn`t "have to" be a diver or use its ocean depth utmost capacity necessarily!
ND submariner from 5 feet away (where you can`t see the Rolex brand name, or the crown), looks like a casual Tissot or vintage black Seikos. And you definitely don`t want thousands of dollars be seen as only hundreds!
