Blue Luminescence on 116610LN

Hi,

So just a quick one, I was looking at my Sub C 116610LN the other night when I noticed that the glow in the dark numbers looked very green to me! I've had the watch a couple of years from new and remember them being very Blue when I last really noticed. I will try and post a pic when I can but has anyone else noticed this or is it just me?

From the Rolex website -
The innovative Chromalight display on the dial pushes back the boundaries of visibility in dark environments. Its distinctive blue glow lasts up to eight hours with a uniform luminosity, practically twice as long as that of standard luminescent materials.

I don't think there is much information on the lifespan of Chromalight, but that is a good thing as it means that it lasts at least longer than it has been available. Also, I have seen that the Chromalight has slightly different hues that go from the very blue to a blueish-greenish. In any case, if there's a problem with your lume you can get the dial replaced when you need to service the watch

This seems to come up with some regularity. I can't imagine the chromolite changes over time, but I wonder if it's more to do with the mixture at the time of application.

I'm only 4 months in on my SubC so nothing but blue here, but I'm curious. Post a pic when you can.

If you do this do you get the old dial to keep or is it kept by the Service Centre?

In my experience, typically RSC will offer you a service dial (or any part for that matter) with the price based on trading in and recycling the old part. Their policy is to keep the original part, however, if you are dealing with someone who has some pull or just wants to be a nice rep they might return the original dial but it will cost more.

I.e. Replaced a bezel insert on my 16610. Along w/ the full watch service the insert replacement price was $48, if I wanted to receive both inserts back it would have been $100.

It seems to start much more blue when fully "charged". It can look more greenish as it fades through the night in my experience.

This. And I have also noticed it depends on what light source is used to charge the lume as well. I think sunlight really makes it look blue. Other light sources vary. It probably has to do with the uv spectrum but I'm no expert so I'm just guessing 😄

I've found this to be true as well. I've also noticed light source has an influence.

Well with lume glow in some persons eyes it may look more green/blue in others more blue it depends on the lume charge and how your eyes adjust to a very dark room. But the more lume total area then the lume will seem to glow more. Its the same for pictures depends on the camera lenses the lighting and where the pictures were taken chromalight is just a fancy name for luminover which is now more on the blue green spectrum.Luminover is made by Nemoto a Japanese luminous paint maker now they moved a part of its factory to Switzerland in 1998 in Joint-ventured with RC-Tritec AG.This was to establish Luminova AG Switzerland for supplying Luminova to Swiss watch industry.Later the name was changed to super-luminover but basically the same paint with a slightly different pigment. But now we have Chromolight a Rolex trademark but again this could be a special colour blend of luminous paint by Nemoto for Rolex.
