I have both and I love both, but they are completely different in just about any aspect, so they complement each other rather than serve as a substitute.

Panerai makes watches in 40mm and up, but the more desirable ones will be in 44mm (Luminor), 46mm (Radiomir) and 47mm (historic 1950 cases).

They offer a wide variety of movements as well, and that makes quite an impact on the price.

I wear a 47mm Panerai 422 and I think it makes an excellent daily wearer. I absolutely love it.

My wrist is a bit under 6.5 inches.
Some wrist shots for comparison.

Chip covered the most important points , and to try to answer your other questions: the production estimate is between 50 & 75k/year (vs 750k 1 million for Rolex), yes quality is good and yes OP makes a great daily (depending on the model, just like Rolex).

I think you must go and try them on. Both are great, I have both but they wear, look, feel, and act completely different on the wrist. Both are amazing and will be heirloom quality pieces. The main thing comes down to you and your comfort, style, overall function and purpose that the watch will serve you. You truly cant go wrong with either.

I can live without my Rolex but I can't live without a Panerai. Get bored, do a strap change and the new watch feeling comes back.

When I first got into 'nice' watches, I thought Panerai looked like something from a Kinder Surprise.

i think you should own at least one of each brand to truly appreciate their differences and uniqueness. I have a Rolex GMT and PAM 564 and love them both.
