Thought on originality, condition and price

Why not buy from our trusted sellers here and save money and time? Then you won't have to worry about questions like originality

It's an original dial, with a lightly polished case, the dial has a fairly unique 6/9 fat indice dial indicative of the early to mid 60's. The strap and buckle are aftermarket, but doesn't negatively impact the value too much but it still seems around $ 500 -$1000 overpriced to me. I'd have to agree with Joe, trusted dealers here could find you the same or very similar watch here for 10-25% less

My take is a little different than the other posts. The watch seems to be in nice condition for its age. Most 50-year-old Day Dates have cases in much worse condition than this one. I've seen many with one, two or all four lugs resembling toothpicks from over-polishing. Additionally, the watch has the original box, chronometer certificate and owner's paper which is a nice bonus.

With the accessories, the watch seems reasonably priced. The seller is also a member of this forum.

People are getting a bit carried away with this polishing stuff, it looks well maintained to me. It is polished but not overpolished, that's normal even if Rolex only polished it at service time, we must remember day date was more expensive always than other models, hence more went to Rolex and infact other watchmakers for regular service as the buyers tended to have the money to do so. The dial is called doorstop and is Original.

Last year i would say the price is high, but it seems the prices for rolex has gone up all around this year. U could always make an offer.

X3. The watch looks strong to me (though I prefer original bracelets). Bob's is a great and trustworthy seller. just bought a 1601 from Bob's last month. Just ask Larry there, and he'll tell you honestly whatever you want to know about the watch.

Thanks for the comments. I am new and been looking at watches and reading for months.
Been looking for a birth year, 1966, datejust thinking the low price would be good for a new guy. Having trouble finding one in top condition that I like. This 1803 seems like it is awesome condition and was very appealing to me. Trying to ease in for a couple grand, but really like this one. My father left me a 78 sub with awesome original hands and dial and now its hard to find anything pleasing that isnt in really good condition and costly.

I'm with Springer and David (way to go out on a limb - when are they ever wrong? :-)

The case still looks pretty thick, especially for its age, and DD prices do seem to be on the up in light of recent auction results.

I bought one similar to this from HQ Milton a couple of months ago for a bit less, but this one has B&P and a slightly fatter case than mine. I considered mine a very fair price in today's market.

A DD sounds like a good fit! great watch for a night out on the town or for dress, and the sub is perfect for everyday wear. If you're set on a birth year, I wouldn't let the price dissuade you much, as b&p birthyears don't come around too often.

I took a closer look and see some dirt or smudges on the edge of the dial?? Can someone take a look at the magnified images of the dial for me. Tell me if I am being too picky.

There does appear to be some corrosion around the dial edge, especially at around 5 o'clock. It seems visible only in the highly magnified pics, though - it's probably almost imperceptible to the naked eye.

Be as picky as you need to be. There's no point buying a watch if it has something that would bother you.

If you look closer it appears to be a ring of corrosion or paint loss around a majority of the dial.


As for having a different take, you didn't lol. how is "light polishing" any different from "polished, but not overpolished."

yes I see the corrosion or paint loss. I am afraid that would bother me. It seems like my excitement was a little premature, but last time I saw a winner I was too late on pulling the trigger. The post was only up for 24 hrs. Let the search continue!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wish you the best of luck in the hunt , these early to mid 60's dials usually have paint loss, corrosion or spotting, must've been something to do with the tritium or paint used back then.

With box and papers I think its a pretty nice watch for the money. You can always search for that perfect dial while enjoying the watch. I imagine you will be looking for a while before coming across another birth year watch with papers.

And even longer finding the fat 6/9 indice dial. Can't wear the box and papers. I'd take an all original in good condition over poor dial with b&p any day of the week

Really don't think it's that poor and I think it would be easier to find a nice dial than another birth year with papers.

If papers mean nothing to the OP than I agree skip it and keep looking.
