The story is about Rolex, a luxury item, not being available in a Socialist environment, however code 301 has been viewed as from a Resort Hotel that catered to "non-socialist clientele" within the country.

I have an omega that was sold in communist China in 1964. I have the Omega Archive Extract to prove this from Omega themselves. It doesn't surprise me they had a code for the gdr.
I used to work for a Fortune 500 that had a country code for North Korea. Obviously it went unused.
