Not a Breitling fan.

I find their designs, use of materials, and large sizes to make the watches look "cheap."

I like older Breitling models, however, I fear that many of the new models cater to the lowest common denominator (I want something flashy! Ie: Breitling for Bentley:p ).

I'll stick to Rolex.

I've just traded my 2001 Breitling Colt quartz which was 'dead' accurate, for a 2001 Datejust.

The Breitling was bought for flying and was superb, the Rolex is bought because I now want the look of a Rolex and don't need the quartz accuracy or high luminosity.

Quite frankly I was lucky, my Rolex has lost approximately a second a day since I bought it and that'll do nicely. I don't need to worry about batteries any more.

I get way more "nice watch" comments for my Breitling Trans Chrono than I do my BLNR but I think it's tough to say which is actually better. In my case, both have in house movements and are a joy to wear so it's all subjective really.

I own both, like many folks here, and love both. I do have a soft spot for Breitling, though.

With regards to looks, my wife finds my new classic looking Yacht-Master dull, compared to my retro style blue Superocean Heritage 46 or my modern looking silver Seawolf (my favorite watch, the one I will never flip). These Breitling are definetly more striking, They draw attention, they are chunkier and more masculine than the YM., yet they do retain a timeless allure. I'm not talking about the bling factor, just the overall first impression when you look at it. You can find bling in both Breitling and Rolex, and I'm not into that.

Quality wise I believe they come across as looking fairly similar, again based on perception, not detailed technical analysis. In terms of accuracy, Superlative chronometer is above COSC. Money wise Breitling is much better value for money, for example a Seawolf is rated 10,000 ft., and cost a quarter of a Deepsea.

Rolex does feel more special to me as an owner, but I think the price one pays has a lot to do with that.

All things considered, Rolex might be marginally better in absolute terms, but Breitling is definitely better in relative terms. I think Rolex is not worth the money, in the same way a diamond is not worth the money. Yes, Rolex is more desirable. This desirability fuelled by marketing on one hand and the low discount policy forced upon ADs on the other hand strongly contribute to explain Rolex higher prices, in my view. Do we really think that the price of a Sub has gone five fold compared to average wage over the past six decades just because of quality improvement and intrinsic value, or has it a lot to do with other external factors less related to the watch itself?

Interesting thread with lots of excellent comments on both Rolex and Breitling.
I believe it safe to say that they both produce excellent watches and most serious watch collectors will have at least one of each brand in their collection.
I have four Rolex and three Omegas to go along with my one vintage Breitling Chronomat that far and away gets the most "nice watch" comments...the 50mm "big case" may have something to do with that.

Never been into Breitlings until a month ago that I bought from DavidSW a mint blue dial Hercules just for curiosity. I absolutely love this watch! what an amazing value for the money, accurate, built like a tank and very well finished, this watch is massive and heavy but more comfortable to wear than my DSSD.
I love Rolex but I am also a Breitling fan now

No; maybe you do but I certainly don't.
