A question worth asking is if it came with box and papers? If not when getting it serviced use RSC (Rolex Service Center); their prices are competitive and they will provide you with documentation that proves it is a true Rolex and not a fake as well as a world wide warranty card for the next two years.

Beautiful shot, and a great watch to inherit from your father!
I wish my dad was into watches; It is the one thing I would love to have from him, which I would always wear on my special occasions.

Your tastes have change though Doc.
I don't notice you wearing any yellow gold anymore. Just WG and Platinum.
Is it for the added stealth, or did it just happen that the watches that sang to you were in that metal?

Great watch that will serve you well. Send it off to the RSC, get a full service done and it will come back good as new ready for many more years. The 16610 is not a rare watch at all and having it serviced won't impact the value at all plus it's probably not one you would ever sell anyway. A full service from the official service centre is the way to go.

oh, and tom, i'll join the crowd and agree that the TT submariner pic is gorgeous!!

Congrats on your very special watch! In addition to the great replies. Don't be embarrassed to ask your Dad for the box and papers (if he has it) for the purpose of completeness. Enjoy the watch in good health.

So he is a bit rough with it during the watch's life so far, and there are a few things that are jumping out at me:

1. The case itself is a bit banged up and I wonder if it's worth it to be refinished. In threads I've read I've heard both sides of the argument, some says showing wear is a sign of age which is a plus; or that a pristinely restored one is more valuable. What should I consider?

2. The bezel rotates one way but it's kind of gunked up. Would like to get that cleaned and lubed.

3. The sapphire has some nicks in it, particularly in the "bulge" over the date

4. When I took off the band to check the serial number, there was some kind of black rubbbery thing that seems to have been disintegrated.

5. The crown when tightened isn't lining up at 12 o'clock, as I understand it should be.

6. I am unclear when the watch has been serviced and what should be done to make sure it's in good condition.

I'm wondering if the cognoscenti can help me understand what kind of cleaning/service I should be looking to do, where I should consider taking it to to be done, and how much I should expect.

Thanks,

William
Have it serviced first then wear it with pride for the next 40 odd years then pass it down to your son.

Have it serviced as the guys say. If you need to save up to do it, maybe you are still in school, then buy some Veraet in the meantime and give the watch a nice little clean and sparkle.

To repeat as others have said, servicing should be done, which should include a new crystal or at least a new "bulge". (If you read here long enough and learn the jargon, you'll see it referred to as the "Cyclops".)

As for polishing/refinishing, that's your decision. It would be nice to see some pics too. You can show the watch and hear what others think. The "oldness can be nostalgic". On the other hand, the spanking-new look of an old watch can be thrilling too.

And you are lucky to receive a watch from your dad, and a great Rolex at that! Congratulations.

Service and light polish. Enjoy your watch, the sentimental value of what your father just gave you is off the charts.

I was hoping for pics. What a nice gesture from pops. I would send it to a independent repair facility to try to keep it all original. Your so lucky your dad had done this
