Yes it's the most common "expensive" brand watch, almost everyone in the world knows how a sub looks like, and yes for thieves who are not watch experts they will go after you and your 7K Rolex and not after the guy with the 200K Patek

Too dressy for me but their movements are awesome and yes Ben I read the numbers they produce are very low, seem to remember it's closer to 1000 than 2000

98%?? If you take the whole population if the works I think any other high end watch other then Rolex has 0,1% chance of being recognized, even when people have heard of brands like Patek they will practically never even suspect you have one when they see your watch

I must admit my trend has been away from Rolex my last 3 watches have been AP, PP and ALS, that said still trying to get the courage to go even more extreme, my local AD is working hard to convince of going true specialist with an MB&F, the Legacy Machine 101, has full in house movement, the caseback is every bit as good or better as an FPJ or ALS. This is a model where they make 32 a year not in the 10's of thousands.....

Could get a very good price but better to spend money on my house at the moment. I know the general thinking is re-sale risk, but this is a 40mm watch, amazing movement and detailing, and plenty of awesome reviews on the watch, this is by far the most affordable MB&F and the least radical, so I think it would have some hope of holding value.

That Legacy machine is amazing! Do it if you can but I imagine it would be a keeper so forget about resale.
I too like some less known brands, My UN for example:

I am interested in diversity but not so much because of what other people wear. Living in NY, you are bound to run into someone with pretty much any watch/brand you can think of, especially if you work in finance or the sort. For me, diversity is more to be able to try offerings from different brands. I think it would be a shame to limit myself to any one brand and not explore others that pique my interest. Same goes for cars!

Funny you say this-- I was in NYC and my colleagues took me to a cigar bar after dinner and I saw more outstanding watches "in the wild" in that one night than a total over the last 5 years in my day to day activities.

Cartier Tank, very unusual for a 21 year old bald tattooed guy.

If financial fortune permitted, I would have a fair few lesser known/considered watches.
Aside from the Zeitwerk, I don't think there'd be much in the way of the usual suspects – bar Glashutte Original, there'd definitely be at least three of those.

I suspect my array of diverse brands would be something along the line of:
Christiaan Van Der Klaauw Real Moon 1980
Jaquet-Droz Quantième Perpétuel
Pierre Kunz Grande Complication
Louis Moinet Tempograph
Grönefeld One Hertz
De Bethune (any really, but DB28 is a tad tasty)
MCT Sequential Two
Marc Jenni Prologue WDT

That's by no means an exhaustive list – there's others I've omitted due to sub-40mm case sizes and I'm pushed for time at the moment. If I get a chance, I'll update to complete the list of potential candidates.

Love the V/C Overseas, but got another Daytona on my list first.

In my industry you can find a Rolex on just about everyones wrist. For that reason, I tend to shy away from the brand. Uniqueness is an appealing quality to me. I prefer the likes of PP and ALS for that reason alone.

I have a rule of only owning one per brand at any one time as diversity is good.
