Your mission: Should you choose to accept it - Destination Wedding Stealth Diver >3k

Alright gents - I know if I need advice - this is the place to come.

here's the situation - Not wearing my Rolex down south. (Long discussion about this on the rolex forum already i'm not insuring it and just wearing it if that's your call out)

Would like a Sub 3k DIVER - has to be able to actually dive. Also, and yes i get this is insane, but it's being paired with a bespoke Tom ford Tux - the goal is to look not TOO silly...

Also want to dive in it - and would like to take it on future adventures

MM300 is winning so far - Thoughts? Vintage also acceptable.

do you actually need the diver bezel function? or just the waterproofness?

the Tudor BB immediately comes to mind if you need the bezel, if not, something like the omega aqua terra would be more dressy

MM300 is bar-none the best watch for the money, especially with the weak Yen. There's never been a better time to buy and it's an absolutely beautiful watch.

Like you, I also own the SD4000. That being said the MM300 is a bit more top heavy, but the finish is in the realm of Rolex IMHO. I wouldn't quite put it on the SD4000 pedestal in terms of overall fit and finish as the MM has more of a vintage-inpired feel, but would stack it to a 14060/M all day long, and have.

BUT... I did read your other thread. Although I think you'd be fine wearing the SD4000. If the price difference is SD4000 minus 114060 then I wouldn't consider it for that price knowing I can get one for $1200 used and the SBDX001 new for $1650 through Chino.

but a casio dive watch [ or a zoop ],and a sekonda dress watch or the likes, and put 2900 into your next rolex after your trip , i wouldnt see 3k investment into something you dont really want as wise.
not being offensive , just thinking practically ,,, very few folk will even notice your wearing a watch , let alone what it is ,,,,

I think you would be better off taking that $3k, and use it to cover the insurance on your Rolex for a LONG time. You'll have some piece of mind that way, and can wear it wherever.

If you insist on a new dive watch, my votes would go to Seiko (under $200), Tudor BBB, or Longines Legend Diver.

Price difference SD4k for SubC + My Band, Her band, her infinity band

lengthy debate over wearing the rolex to mexico and diving - I wore my old 14060 a couple times diving. Came back scratched, dinged, dented, etc - the wear you'd expect from a dive watch - My Steinhart also same thing happened with it.

Night/Cave or low visibility dives especially prone to it. I'll do about 14 dives over the course of the week. Dropping in from the boat and something scrapes your watch etc.

Then there's the whole going places @ night in mexico. Just seems like a lot of risk for no reason.

MM300 is 1800 CAD.

As to budgeting, and why it's what it is - We're getting zero help from the parents/family etc - Iv'e already had to drop 24k this month (Bit of a doozy), another 6 next month. So I will have basically one paycheque to go treat myself prior to the wedding. I've managed to scrape through this w/o going into debt, and would like to continue...

to all those that are going to say wait for the envelopes etc - Destination wedding, won't be getting many

To all those that say mexico is fine to wear a watch - both my Mexican buddies coming to the wedding both independently said they wouldn't if I want to do anything off resort - Good enough for me - they live there.

Unless my JLC MUT sells in the next 2 days - gotta do what I gotta do to make the payments in the mean time :) So chances of keeping the SD are pretttttty low.

If you want a nice watch I would go black bay or MM300. Heck, even a squale would be cool or a certina DS action diver both well under 1k but very nice.

People will always say to just insure your Rolex but I see that as missing a crucial detail. Yes, your watch would get replaced but why even put yourself in a situation where more than your watch is at risk?

Blackbay def goes on the list - usually easy to find used for 2.3k CAD
MM300 is 1.8k CAD

alright we're up to 2 that are options - and yeah.. im with BombFrog - why risk more than your watch? (Insurance I guess in that case only benefits my wife :P)

Friday I have the morning to run around trying things on prior to going to my sister's wedding -:)

For a little bit more than 3K, I think you should buy the Seiko Spring Drive SBDB001.

It's almost at steal compare to Swiss watches. 10 years ago SBDB001 is around the same MSRP as the Sub, now Sub is twice the price but SBDB001 still has the same MSRP.

And with the weak yen, you can buy this watch now for only a little over 3k, and I doubt you can find any Swiss dive watch at this level of quality for 3k.

it's honestly the worst.

It's fine though - my JLC went - so the dress watch searching again.. thinking a gold day date on leather, or maybe a manual wind VC patrimony. So that's keeping my mind off of it.

Also my SDc i got to keep and it makes a great daily -so happy with that. (again on leather nato, not a braclet guy) ... kinda starting to lurk for a 1680 Red to replace that with.. Red Sub, Gold Day Date, MM300... (or something else for the day date) but seems like a pretty solid collection...Just don't know yet.

See, lots of things to keep my mind off it.... (Just keep telling myself that!)
