Day Date 1803 good Dress watch?
Seems like there's a lot of negative press out there around the 1803, and to go for the model after 1988 where the double quickset becomes an option - Is this true? is there movement issues?
I want my dress watch to be under 10k, and gold, and I though a 1803 fits the bill - and unless i'm missing something, a president on leather is a nice watch hand down to any kids I may be so lucky to have (god willing) |

Yes, a great dress watch, with or without quick set. And if your budget is $10K you can certainly find a great condition 1803 for much less (head only, of course.) I would say that the quick set is more convenient (vintage and quick set usually don't go together), but I never had any movement issues with my 1803 from 1964. Good luck!

I have a 1985 birthyear 18038 which has the quickset day, but not a quickset date. I've had no issues with it. Hope that helps.

Negative press? This is the first time I heard this. I have both ref n had no issue whatsoever, as well as many well documented famous people wearing them.
I blame it on the autoconnect. |

The movement in the 1803 is a solid workhorse. The only "bad press" I ever hear is not on the movement's reliability , but the fact that it is not quickset. Makes keeping the day-date in synch a bit more work/inconvenient.
I would take that inconvenience any day for the cool acrylic crystal. The single and double quickset day dates are sapphire crystal. |

Here is my early to mid 70's 1803 that was my grandfathers, my dads now mine. I think it has that classic look that never goes out of style. I keep it on a watch winder so the date isn't too much of a pain to change.

Here's my circa 1977 1803. I think it's just gorgeous and makes a fine dress watch. The lack of quickset is kind of a PITA, but not a deal-killer, IMHO, in light of its vintage goodness.
No problems with its movement for me, plus it helps me with my Italian. How many watches can do that? |

Try shopping more... you can get a very nice single quick set, 18038, for around 9k here in the trusted sellers section... Be wary of band stretch when buying any day date though.. Good luck

Thanks everyone - Head only 1803 yes i'd try to find something much lower than 9k - I haven't been able to find the newer w/ box papers for less than 10k CAD (I'm dealing with our absolutely crap dollar right now)
Thanks for the feedback everyone! |
