I guess my ignorance and lack of funds showed at my local AD.
Let me see that "Pepsi GMT" followed by "it's $38,000"... GULP! "Ya got any vintage Pepsi's..." |

Estimated probability that Rolex will launch a steel Pepsi and upset all their WG Pepsi customers: 0,0001%. Extremely close to zero - maybe Rolex will suffer massive financial hardship making them have to do it for cash flow and to avoid closing the business, maybe Rolex will appoint a crazy manic CEO with zero respect for the tradition of the business, brand and key customers, maybe the earth is flat...

Schnitzel
This question has been beaten so hard it now looks Wiener Schnitzel. However you ask the question the economics tied to brand health don't make sense.

Rolex looks ahead, not backwards. You'll see a Coke GMT is Platinum before you see a SS Pepsi....

A new SS Pepsi is doubtful in my opinion.
It would steal the thunder of the WG version. |

Congrats!
And it would be very surprising if Rolex made a SS BLRO.

a bit? :)
Rolex uses its massive brand equity to move up a color scheme of GMT much higher in price, and then goes ahead and takes a giant dump on its premium high paying customer by releasing a nearly identical version 1/3 of the cost? Because 3-5% of its fan base wants it? Come on. Are children asking this, because I think we need an ELI5 why this question is so silly and branding, pricing and marketing actually mean.

I have no idea whether it will ever happen, but I offer the following with all respect in response to prior posts -
Unless one of us has a mole into the Rolex boardroom, I don't think any of us should say it will never happen - we just don't know. The folks who run Rolex are businesspeople, and if they can make a ton of dosh selling a particular model, they might just do it. They've recently demonstrated a willingness to listen to the market in at least one regard - witness the change in the two-toned bluesy back to the classic sunburst dial. I don't agree that a steel ceramic Pepsi would cheapen the WG model, least of all in the minds of owners of that watch. They know what they've got; further, I think they take pleasure in the fact that they know what they've got, even if others (leaving aside the aficionados) do not. As usual, Padi is spot on - if one lusts for a Pepsi bezel, buy a 16710 against the day it does or does not happen. I have one and love it. Just on a personal note and based only on photographs, I don't care for the shade of red in the WG Pepsi; whether due to chemistry or some designer's esthetic, it seems a bit dull to me, compared to a fresh (or faded!) aluminum. Finally, I think as a group we should have a bit more patience with folks asking old questions; I don't think that (for example) we should charge members with an encyclopedic knowledge of prior topics, or chastise those who know they are asking an old question but perhaps wish to add a new twist to it. If I see a member attempting to teach an old dog new tricks, I try to simply not respond, rather than posting something that might be taken the wrong way. We're all here because we enjoy the brand; let's try to let everyone do so in their own way, subject to reasonable restrictions as to content. Just my two cents. |
