Keep your first and save for the gold...that way you have one of each. Gold is GREAT. Something special about gold.

I'd always want a SS watch in the collection.
Keep it if possible or start planning on a SS piece to take it's place in addition to the PM.

I will probably be scolded for saying this, but I can't resist: Gold watches are considered a luxury item, they should be bought and worn by those that can easily afford them, a gold GMT is not a tool its a luxury item like a Ferrari or Lamborghini would be. An SS GMT is a tool, would you trade your ford F150 to buy a Ferrari? basically what I am getting at is this, if you need to sell your GMT because the 5k will make or break your gold GMT purchase chances are you are not really ready to be wearing a gold Rolex. This is just my humble opinion.

You all are confirming what I already thought...gold is in my future.

The reason for not having two (a gold and a ss GMT) isn't about the purchase price of each, but I would feel guilty for having a "collection" of Rolex's. Just one, even a gold version, is a more modest approach for collecting and appreciating. (to me atleast)

The true difference of financial standing between owning a ss rolex or gold rolex is nearly the same as choosing a Ford Edge vs a BMW X5 for your next car. BUT if you choose the ford edge AND the gold watch...after five years if both where sold you would have more cash than choosing and selling the X5 after 5 years...

If you don't plan on wearing the SS anymore it's ok, but at the same time like the person mentioned above, if your selling it because you need cash to upgrade its probably a bad fiscal decision.

Personally I feel like gold watches should be purchased when 30k has no effect on your financial status.

I get it, but time and TRF are great healers of a guilty conscious. Always a good feeling if you have saved, traded or in some way earned such a luxury purchase... at least in the beginning

I think I know what you're saying, although not 100% sure. If it is just to be one, maybe consider the WG model?

This could be a tough one. I guess it all boils down to sentiment and the need or want for a SS reference. The SS GMT is an amazing reference and in my opinion one of the best and well rounded modern Rolex models available. Definitely ideal for a one-watch collection. That being said, if there is no sentiment or need for it anymore, then I do not see why one should not trade it in for something else that they hold as a "grail".

For me, my first Rolex holds great sentiment for me and do not have any plans on selling it to fund future purchases, regardless if it sees a lot of wrist time or not. I would rather save that extra bit than to lose my first Rolex.

The last thing that is worth mentioning is that whether or not a YG model can and will work for you as a daily watch. If so, then by all means, go for it. As Tom said in his post above, there is nothing like wearing a PM watch.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Taking a nod from my good friend Neil, here is a picture for encouragement!

I think a case could be made for going for the gold. Since you're likely opting for a GMT, the GMT name remains represented on your wrist. This could ameliorate any post partum concerns you have in selling the SS GMT. Regarding the cost, this could go either way. While all that has been mentioned regarding affording the watch and potential perils of PM ownership is sound and true, the actual cost of ownership may not feel conspicuously expensive. If you own this watch for years to come, then the annual cost of ownership may not be prohibitive. While such a purchase will likely never be considered prudent, owning this watch for 5 years (about how long you've had the SS model) may set you back about 100-150/month. Call it a combined 6k-9k for insurance, maintenance and loss you'll take upon selling it. I won't count what you could receive in interest were it invested wisely. I think this has to be considered discretionary monies being spent.

For me, the appeal would be in the potential set it and forget it factor. If you've got one special watch, you won't be as apt to flip and experiment. This can add up and being a flipper with precious metal pieces would be prohibitively expensive for me so I'd be inclined to stick with what I have.

Good luck either way and there are some pretty compelling pics in this thread.

as already stated a few times, keep the first and save for the grail. having both later will be beneficial. You may not want all gold as your everyday watch- only for occasions.
