Panerai question

Hi everyone,

I'm asking as I don't know. Is Panerai up there in the high quality food chain?

I never flip a watch and don't care about resale value after I have own it.

I saw the below model today and it sang to me and my Wife liked it too. Have yet to see it in person or try it on.

I just want to know if from a quality perspective .. Is it a good or very good brand..
Tks

They hold their resale value quite well, so that says a lot about the quality. They have a lot of very similar looking watches. My personal favourite is the 328...

High taste of designs I would say, and that's important part of the definition of quality. But it is not as well built or refined into details compare to the top range of watches.

Do some research before jumping in. They are good watches though.

Panerai is in the upper middle class of horology. Rolex sits at the top of this range with Panerai just a hair behind followed closely by Breitling and Omega. The real upper class of watches would be Patek, Audemars, Vacheron, and now Lange. JLC is just a hair behind these brands. Of course there are numerous other brands that fill in around these more well known brands but I think you catch my drift.

Panerai is moving to in house movements which is the hallmark of a brand looking to compete with Rolex and Omega. I'd say Rolex is Panerai's closest rival and they have a shared history which is why many Rolex collectors are also Panerai collectors. Panerai does many things right but also does many things wrong. The base models are fantastic and really representative of the brand's identity. I am off the opinion that there are too many subtle variations within the four major casing identities within the brand at the moment. It is also my opinion that because of this, the resale value of some of the models has taken a hit.

Panerai is largely credited with heralding the big watch trend which in some people's eyes has given the brand a "dodgy" reputation, however I disagree and view Panerai as a brand that has always classically been oversized. If you want a larger watch or a watch that looks good with DLC, then I think this is the right brand for most. I owned two Panerai but ended up flipping them: one for extra cash and one to add value to a trade for a Rolex. I definitely see myself coming back to the brand once I have a more rounded Rolex collection. I definitely consider Panerai my favorite brand after Rolex.

Hope this helps.

Panerai is very respectable. They have watched starting for 5k-400k. So there's a watch for everyone. It's also not at known as Rolex but very respected in the watch community. Way better than hublot which I feel has no respect in the community.

This. /\

I have both Panerai and Rolex. My Panerai is 15+ years old, so it has the reworked ETA handwind movement. It winds rougher than my Daytona, but that's more a reflection of how buttery-smooth the Daytona is than how rough the Panerai is. Panerai cases are well-made, and I've beat the crap out of mine and it's held up well over the years. It's been 150' underwater, it's been banged against metal doorframes (the Panerai took a piece of the doorframe with it!), and it's always worked. Panerai's lume is out-of-this-world good, and you don't see a ton of Panerais in the wild. All in all, they're nice watches.

Cheers!

Forgot to mention lume, which my friend here very clearly points out: Panerai's lume and legibility are second to none. They have also mastered the sandwich dial. I would steer you towards the base models: 372, 000, 005, 112, 111, 210, 183. I know these aren't all technically base, but close enough. I like your selection of the Radiomir 1940 Automatic, I just prefer Panerai as manual winds. Just preference, nothing else.

It looks like the 620 with P 4000 movement. I'm hoping to see this one too, but AD's in Toronto don't have it yet.

They're ok but not PP, VC, AP. I have a 372 and enjoy it, but while nice, they're nowhere near the top of the food chain in terms of WIS respect in my opinion. My wife has an automatic and when you wind it with the crown it feels gritty and broken. Panerai service said that's normal.

I would be curious if the watch you saw is the PAM0572, 45 mm version of the Radiomir 1940 3 Days Automatic. I just picked up one of these just over a week ago- my first venture into the Panerai brand. I believe the PAM0620 was limited to only 500 units, so evidently they are harder to locate and probably cost more as well. I liked the 620 because they kept the 9 and the seconds dial, although the dial was a bit more crowded than the 45mm version I purchased.

Both feature the newer in house P4000 movement and the 45mm version i now wear is one of 2000 built last year. I set the movement against the NIST official government time and it is now about 1 second slower- over 9 days when I check it against the current NIST time- I am pretty happy with that!! The lume is fantastic and the build of the watch seeks very good. I have worn it everyday and it fits very well.

It is a little larger than what I envisioned wearing, however, it wears very well on my 7-1/2" wrist and is much more comfortable than my previous 40mm steel watch/link band automatic rig I wore for the past 5 years.

Try several of them on and see what you like- I think they are very worth of consideration with regards to being a higher end timepiece.
