16233 two-tone Datejust

It's been about five years now since the Rolex bug bit me. Over this period, I've purchased a few pre-owned watches, including a 16600 Sea Dweller and 16610LV. Over this period, the prices of stainless steel Rolexes have increased, as you know -- on those mentioned, as well as the 16710 Pepsi GMT, for example.

I also purchased the 16233 two-tone Datejust pictured below, as I was drawn to its LNIB condition, offered by a seller I trust (Patrick Aziz). While it's not my favorite Rolex, I do enjoy wearing it, in part because it's light and comfortable on my 6.75" wrist. The Champagne dial shown came with the watch but I added a silver stick dial to increase legibility and decrease the 'gold factor'.

Even though it's a fairly recent K serial (2001) it's a throwback to the '80s and '90s, as anyone who is over the age of 50 would know. For this and other reasons, it's not considered especially collectible. Given that tastes change over time, do you think a watch like this will make a 'comeback' or will we always think of it as a 'power watch' from a bygone era? Appreciate your thoughts.

John

Timeless classic. Never will go out of style. Not for me however, considering I'm 20.

I think its made a come back. Still worn by old men, but now cool on young women.
If you're out of those demograghics though, you're all at sea I'm afraid ;)

For many people when they think of Rolex it's a TT DJ, it'll be revered and appreciated a 100 years from now just as much as it is today. I wear mine a lot

Sub is old style and in fashion, I see plenty of young people rocking these. While I am not young, it was close to the first Rolex I bought, which i subsequently rolled into DD which are equally old school.

Could not have said it better even though I am not 20.

The TT YG Datejust is arguably the most recognized watch in the world and to me it defines and is the iconic Rolex.

Presently I have a 116233 with a white face and bold Romans. This is my third TT DJ. I love it. I love the timeless style of the DJ. It is the quintessential Rolex, an icon. I'm 39. I don't ever see me not having this one in the rotation.

I just turned 49 and remember that watch very well. Definitely like you said, I'll always remember it as a power watch from the bygone era.

Not me btw.

That DJ is without question a timeless classic. I own the exact same one-TT jubilee with fluted gold bezel and champagne dial. It looks very much at home today with business casual attire/suit/tux as it did in the late 80's.

My first Rolex is the 16233, I'm 32, loved the design when I was a kid and still love it. It's just a classic design, never gets old.

I'm 30 an wear a TT DJ 16233, I have always seen men of power wearing these in my neighborhood back in the 1990s. Every since then I always wanted one.

I love the TT datejust! The watch goes with almost everything, with the exception of jeans and a t-shirt. Throw on a button-down and you're good.

I think that in the US we've been migrating towards a more technology based economy where the workforce dresses much more casually.

That workforce is building wealth, and are buying stainless steel watches as they are less formally dressed.

I believe I read where this is still the leading Rolex sold world-wide, mostly due to the formal dress of Asian cultures.

Will the US migrate back to being more formally dressed? If/when it does, that's when the TT will stop taking the resale "hit", down to the price of the stainless.

Either way, it counts as a dress watch, and I will be very excited when I buy one some day.
