Red 1680 - thoughts and opinions

Hi,

As stated elsewhere on these forums I'm on my quest to find a vintage Submariner, ideally something I can source locally. This evening I went to another vintage store and was surprised to find they had a 1680 with the red Submariner text. The first 4 digits of the serial number (3740) place this in the era of 72/73 I believe which is fine (ideally looking for a 5513 from 79, my birth year, but pretty flexible otherwise). The price is around USD 11.5k but I believe there is room to negotiate. The watch comes with a box.

All I want to know is:

1 - Does it look right? (Parts, patina etc.)
2 - Is the price fair?

As always, your expert opinions would be greatly appreciated.

I just closely compared the dial on the pictures I've posted to 5 different samples on the hqmilton site and the fonts on text is...all wrong! Am I right?

For starters the Submariner just seems fishy, the E is not right and no open 6's. Is this a correct observation?

You might do well to visit our reference section and get some education. In answer to your question---pass on it.

I've read a few posts on the dials of a red sub. It seems this is the last iteration, so probably a Mark 6. But just to be specific, what's actually wrong with it? Sorry, I can't really tell. All I can tell with certain is that the hands and bezel seems replaced. But what's wrong with the dial?

Thanks everyone. I'm just amazed that a watch store in the middle of the city that prides itself on it's vintage collection would sell a monstrosity like this so openly (and at a not so competitive price of USD 11.5k!).

Did you let the store owner know his 11k 1680 has a fake dial?

Wow. I would totally have been deceived especially if it was from a store.

Even some store owners can be fooled (though some......). The tail on the M for meters is a well known tell as well as the off set L.

Aftermarket dial, case has been refinished. Newer modern bracelet, aftermarket bezel and pearl, tritium hands.. this one is just all wrong and all bad. PASS

This is from Golden Time Watch Company in Deira Dubai. They used to have the watch on their site but not anymore.

Quite a few dealers frequently visit them and they have a very active instagram account as well.

I believe there are shops that knowingly sell sub-par pieces to many unknown or inexperienced buyers. Unethical business tactics

looks like a counterfeit mark VI dial?

really suggest you spend time and EDUCATE yourself before making a purchase...

don't become a "more money than brains" statistic.

here's a link for some reference to get you started.
