Remembering Dad

When I was perhaps 5 years old, I'd watch my dad get dressed for work and he'd let me put on his watch and clomp around in his big Florsheim gunboats.

Fifty-plus years later, I still treasure putting on his watch and wearing the same brand of shoes.

Miss you, Dad. But I'm doing OK. :)

Best,
Hilo

Great Tribuite

There is nothing like timeless classics. The Florsheims were my Grandfather's that he purchased new in 1953. They are now my "Special Occasion" shoes. The watches are a late '50's Air King and a Tudor 79090, they were not my Grandfather's as he was not a watch guy, but he had plenty of Style otherwise.

Here's to tributes to those we really miss and timeless classics!!!!

Nice post.

Reminds me of shining my father's shoes. Boy, I hated doing thing. Man, I would love the opportunity to do it just one more time.

Carbon,

Thank you. I'm proud to own it. Attached photo taken with cell phone. The "white" at 6 o'clock is just window glare off the crystal. I don't have a better set-up or equipment; sorry.

When it was passed on to me, I immediately drove it over to Bob Ridley. He tore the entire thing down and cleaned 50 years of ick out of it and it keeps incredibly accurate time for a watch that's more than 60 years old.

He didn't, of course, touch the dial or hands, but I did ask him to install a modern crystal since, (YES), I actually _wear_ it. The original plastic crystal is still with me, (as pictured).

I've got a photographer friend; if there's interest I'm sure she'd be willing to take some professional quality photos.

Thank again for your kind words,

Hilo

I think of my dad every time I strap this on:

I have a pair of his shoes (he had been a Bass Weejuns man since the 60s, and had just bought a new pair right before he died), but he was a 12E and I'm an 11EEE, so I don't get to wear them. They are on my shoe rack in my closet.

You know guys my dad never had to nickels to rub together let alone a Rolex but I so loved and respected him for the man he was. Maybe he never had a Rolex but his son has two!
Well done pop, miss you, love you.

I used to do my Dad's, too. I didn't like the idea - each time - at first, then, once I'd started, I got into it and quite enjoyed it. Usually 4 or 5 pairs a week, but sometimes as many as 9!!
