Entering the World of AP and need advise....

Hey guys hope everyone here is well...

Ive been a collector now for many years and wanted to pick the brains of you the experts with regards to AP...

My collection so far includes Omega (Seamaster and SpeedyPro) Rolex (Vintage GMT 16750, 1680 Red, WG Sub Smurf and WG SkyDweller) and a Patek Philippe 5980R...

Ive been after the Patek World Time Enamel dial 5131R but its proving impossible to get unless you are willing to spend double the retail price... Since there is no other Pateks which have my attention at the moment, I have turned to AP which ive been looking at last few years and not till last few months with the release of the new Royal Oak Perpetual in Steel its been on my mind and possibly could be my next purchase..

My question to you guys here on the AP forum is what is your take on the new RO Perpetual?? And what do you feel about AP in terms of resale value on the secondary market?? Does AP hold its value over time??? I hear it doesnt but wanted to ask you guys here who have owned the brand for years and flipped....

Look forward to any advise you can give an AP newbie..

Andy...

Like with any brand it's about buying it right on the front side (get the best discount).

As that piece is new, no one knows longer term at this point. However, since it's not a limited edition, they can continue to manufacture as many as they desire, which longer term won't be great for resale.

You'll really enjoy the AP brand.

Buy right. Enjoy it.

I agree with Paul...

AP - Always buy right on the way into any piece you plan to purchase. It always minimizes the pain on the way out.

As for what you are considering to get - the new 41mm Annual Calendar...I can't wait to see it in person - It may jump onto my list of "must haves" too!

Good luck and welcome to AP

Love that reference! I would want a strong discount and that may prove challenging this early in production. Good luck.

Love it! SS with blue dial is on my want list but I'm waiting to see it in person to see if it's a must have.

Buy right and AP will hold its value in purchase price vs. resale just as well as Rolex or PP. Pay full price on a YG GMT or PP 5960p and you are going you lose your a$$ on resale. Some is true with certain AP models.

I would suggest waiting if possible till they are more readily available which like all models will be. If buying from a boutique with little to no discount you will lose your A$$ on this model when selling.

I would suggesting waiting a bit like a year or so to see what happens with the piece in popularity & demand. Also prices would have also steadiest a bit. Now the problem is can you wait ;). Here are some shots I took at the NYC boutique.

Thank you guys for all the advise and yeah like many brands its buying a piece at the right price I guess and AP is no different... I think I will sit tight a little and let the price settle on this ref but I am pretty sure thats the AP for me.. Looks stunning and I especially love that Moon phase with the way the moon looks..

Btw what discount is acceptable on AP's in order to get out what you put in basically?? 15-20%??? I know the more the better though... lol

Ive have tried the perpetual calendar skeleton and the previous platinum/steel version but i think they are all discontinued, the newer version is larger so it wears slightly differently but haven't tried it yet.

To me APs finishing on steel and RG is sitting at the top of the pyramid right now, for prices they don't all keep their values very well can't call a standard produced model an investment though

The 41mm Perpetual Calendar in either SS or RG is a stunning piece and has a lot of wrist presence. The finishing is top-notch and probably the best in the business. My only grip is that it appears too static due to the lack of second hand.

As for resale, buying at the right price is the key. AP resale ( and depending on model popularity ) is generally quite good.

It's a phenomenal piece.

The colors, function, feel

Hope it'll find a good stable ground.

Tried this on at the boutique.

Hi Andy,
You have a great collection! I think an AP is absolutely the way to go for your next watch.

Although maybe a little harder to resell than say a Rolex, you shouldn't have much problem flipping an AP and if purchased at the right price the loss should be minimal.

Given, the perpetual you are talking about is a brand new model and may be very hard if not impossible to find on the used market right now. Discounts at the boutique will be minimal also.

I would agree with the other posters that it might be smart to wait a bit on this one if resell value is important. I haven't seen this one in the flesh yet but it looks amazing from the pics.

Good luck, enjoy the hunt and keep us updated!

This is a great reference, and i hope this will be my first AP, goodluck and i hope you get yours soon, ive tried it at the boutique. you wont regret this piece, such a beauty!

i think if you buy new then there will always be a hit if you decide to sell but as long as you enjoy the watch for a few years i say thats an acceptable loss IMHO, goodluck!
