I hope someone can help me. Does this Speedmaster have a display back? I can see the medallion on the back in pictures but I've also read that this model has a display back.

Can an expert or owner clarify?

There should not be a display back and I would check to make sure the special edition certificate watch number matches the watch number on case back. Warranty card serial should also correspond to the watch.

I have that watch and it does not have a display back (a see through one I mean).
If I remember correct,case back is indeed sapphire crystal, case back is etched with the Apollo 15 patch.
