I agree wholeheartedly although I do love Plumpjack Merlot!

Thanks for the invite Mark!

I really don't "know" anything about watches, other than how to buy them. But all that takes is money. But I have enough sense not to act like I do "know" about watches, using technical jargon, and speaking about something I know nothing about, which is def more frequent than not here on this thread. If somebody made "errors" like these over a watch here on TRF, he'd be ridiculed to death. Some people just like to hear themselves talk...especially when it comes to wine. People like that come into our tasting room daily with there pompous attitudes, and tend to be the most ignorant person in the room about wine. Generally trying to impress there friends on there "knowledge"( I use the term loosely) as well as there "cellar", and how many $100+ bottles they bought at Opus One If somebody is going to talk wine other than " I liked it, I didn't like it", get ready for someone that does know the technical end of wine to "correct" you. Again thanks for the invite Mark. Lookin forward to "chiming in" with a winery owners perspective. Considering my family has been making wine since pre-prohibition, I feel qualified to speak about it. TN

Here's the point I was trying to make on Napa and surrounding area concerning the Chardonnay drinkability after certain years. You'll see that at the 5 year point they are all at peak drinking time. Very little variable, some at 6-9 years.

For some reason Sonoma wasn't included but shouldn't make much difference.

So, this being 2015 all the 2010 (5 years) are peaked and ready to drink. All at 2006/05/04 are drinkable but in decline. 2003 are past their peak, which was the point I was trying to make with my earlier posts.

2011 and 2012 are not quite there generally but can poured.

Anything 2002 or older are generally undrinkable, although there might be exceptions.

The Cabernet as you can see is the top 2 lines so discount those as we're strictly talking Chardonnay.

This is a general guide from Wine Spectator, so in closing there are slight variables like alcohol content, barrel time or aging in stainless steal etc..that might make it last longer or speed up aging.

If you google "how long can Chardonnay last before opening" with some exceptions you should see 5 years from bottling.

Happy drinking and I hope no one took offense at anything that was said, as I didn't.

And Alexander Valley is an AVA in Sonoma too. But Russian River Valley is mentioned and that wasn't. Appreciate the heads up though.

I guess your dinner invitation is off now

EDIT: I brought up Alexander Valley because it's one of the most densely planted areas in Sonoma County.

Simply...The Wine Thread

Tonight's Delight...

A great classic Bordeaux style blend and a good value for the price.

Winemaker's Notes

Deep crimson color. Aromas of mocha, black currant, cocoa, and a melange of baking spices. Flavors of velvety, ripe fruit elevated by notes of chocolate and French vanilla. Velvety tannins complement a lengthy, utterly elegant finish.

Blend: 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Merlot, 4% Malbec

Some additional notes as well...

Opens with aromas of cherry leather and spice. Medium in body with softly gripping tannins and nicely integrated acidity. In addition to red fruit, sweet tobacco and minerals please the palate with a somewhat buttery vanilla flavor and a satisfying finish. A lot of nice flavors going on here. Lush black cherry and currant fruit with notes of mocha and some oak.

Drinking this as I post a

Tenuta Sette Ponti Crognolo 2011

Winemaker's notes: "Intense ruby red in color, the wine has a fruity, spicy bouquet and ripe cherry and berries on the palate. It has the vivid acidity typical of Sangiovese, with well-integrated tannins and an earthy finish".

(It's very nice!)

Two of my favorites right there!!! Enjoy them!!! (I know you will!!)

We opened up an '07 AND an '00 Les Pavot at the lake with some friends before thanksgiving and they were amazing --- the 07 was perfection.

I'm anxious to hear how the 08 is.

Hundred Acre...no words needed - probably my favorite Napa cab.

I hate they're closed (PM) while the wife and I are in Napa after Christmas -- but we'll be getting the new allocations - I think right after the new year...

Cheers my friend!!!

Thanks gents! Roger I can tell you the 08' drinks very well being both complex and silky with a long finish like so many of the great wines that have come out of this amazing vineyard. Trace I agree with 100% and one of my most enjoyable wines.

The Hundred Acre is also an enjoyable wine and a big one at that much like JW's personality!

When blended, only about 20%+ or- Merlot is used. Check your Napa Valley Silver Oak bottles, that's a Bordeaux blend! Blending is done by using any number of the 5 varietals(in any %s) allowed by French law (Cabernet, Cab Franc, Merlot, Petite Verdot, Malbec) Here in the USA we can only call it a "Meritage" by law. It's the same laws put on us by the French when it came to Champagne...that's why we have "sparkling wine" in Calif. Truth is "Meritage" isn't even a "real" word! We Americans made it up! Don't be fooled though, some Napa( and plenty other regions) Merlots are as big as any Cabs thought of being, depending on the fruit, and how it's "built". Happy searching!

Bordeaux blends, as you stated, are made up of the five varietals. They have nothing to do with softening up Burgundian wines. Burgundy wines are not only a different region but almost exclusively Pinot noir

Noted. you are 100% correct Renato My sentence should have read..."French/Bordeux region wines" not "Burgundian"....sorry I had Pinot Noir on the brain.
