Got a new Daytona last week and have one question (so far)

Is it bad to leave the chronometer running all the time? It seems a waste to have that nice big second hand sitting motionless...

I feel like most people have it off. I hear it doesn't last very long off your wrist with the chronometer running.

It is fine to leave the chronograph on, the movement is jeweled and can function continosuly.

On another note:
I will time it on when a different time zone is at 12 noon or midnight, there you will have a GMT

The "chronograph" shouldn't be left running. It drains your power reserve much faster. Also it influences the time keeping as well as it downs the power reserve. It's not made to be constantly running so it'll cause a ton of wear and tear.

I think you mean the chronograph function it will do no harm perhaps a hour or so less power reserve with it running 24/7.Myself cannot see any point in running it if you are not timing anything. But if not used its best just to start it a few time a month or so, just run a couple of minutes then reset.

This is not true for vertical clutch chronographs ad the Rolex 4130 used on modern Daytonas. Instead, it's true for "standard" chronos like the 4030 or the 72-family used on the previous Daytona models.

Wow, pretty much a 50-50 split on do it or don't do it...
Since it never leaves my wrist the "off wrist time" issue moot. So I guess it really comes down to what do I like to see? For no good reason I just like to see the big second hand moving as it does on almost every other (non-Rolex) watch I've ever owned. Knowing that it won't cause the watch to grind to a halt prematurely puts my mind at ease.
Thanks for all the input.

You must run it it from time to time ( no pun intended) it keeps it lubricated and healthy.. Rolex NYC advised me of same.

That being said you should run it for 12 hr increments to fully cycle the sub dials

Too much misinformation as usual from some who have not checked the answers for themselves.

These are the results on my SS Daytona after a full wind.

Daytona..................71:35:59 CHRONO RUNNING
Daytona..................74:07:43 CHRONO OFF

I did not see a noticable rate difference on the timegrapher. On my Daytona.

"I hear it doesn't last long" and "it drains your power reserve much faster" is not even close the correct answer.

As for a 'ton of wear'??

I run my chrono hand synced to my seconds sub dial whenever I wear my Daytona. It's just a big second hand to me and only needs the pushers to be unscrewed to time something.

Peter is correct as usual.

Such anger - mine was actually a question about running the chrono long enough to let the sub dials complete an entire cycle. My apologies.

Neither you or your watch will last forever.

Do what pleases you.

(I admit sometimes I run mine just to watch it work. )

I like to see the chrono running. I also like to run it to excersise the movement.

As has been said, I'm sure that running the chrono will not reduce the power reserve noticeably and I also don't worry about if I will have to have the watch serviced after 9 years instead of maybe 10 if the chrono was not running.

The way I look at it is that I have paid quite a bit for a watch I really like. If I can get ever more enjoyment from the watch by running the chrono, I'm going to do it. Enjoy you watch wearing it the way you like and try not to worry too much about it.

It won't do any harm, but why. I use a chronograph at work, I'm always starting and stoping timing different events.
I guess I might feel different if I wore a chronographs for looks alone.

Run the chrono 60s per day starting the 1st in a given month. The minute hand will then tell you the date.

I have no problem running mine at all times... I switch it up though as sometimes it drives me nuts seeing the sub dial hands all over the place.
