They're Here

Twice in the last two days I've been held up as the Fighting Irish head to practice at Scottsdale Community College

I agree! It's not like they are late for the real game.

I've been here for 15 years, every team that has played in the Fiesta Bowl always gets that treatment to and from practice.

I'm not sure why, It's a good question. Both yesterday and today there were at least a dozen bikes dedicated to blocking intersections and keeping the 5-6 buses together.

Then later, I drove by the Scottsdale Millennium where the Irish are staying and there was a large police presence there. Like a half dozen SUV's etc..

Pretty much every football bowl team gets one when they travel. They expedite the travel and cut down on fans acting like idiots when they are traveling. Call it perks of getting selected. The bowl pays for it so people can't complain about tax dollars being wasted. Same goes for pro teams.

You get a police escort for your funeral, and all you did was drop dead

All it takes is one knucklehead being stupid and it's an international incident. Better to have the escort when these big team convoys are out and about.

You're right the Bowls pay for it but I find it a bit ridiculous they need a police escort.

My buddy plays in the NHL. Police escorts to and from airport then to and from hotelre standard. Athletes, even at the college level are worth millions to their school just like the pros are worth millions to their respective teams. I wouldn't be surprised if specific riders were in place mandating the police involvement. Let's not overlook the private charters and even team planes.

For the amount of money involved in the bowl games(primarily the big 5), the organizers want to guarantee that the teams get from a to b as quickly and uneventful as possible. As was said earlier, it only takes one jackass to turn a bus ride to practice into the lead story on every news channel across the country.

Well maybe Buckeye fans are more rabid?

It's common sense to me - a "bus parade" is not easy to manage without support.

I get the need for a police escort as it relates to player/team safety but blocking traffic and intersections like its a diplomatic motorcade is just plain stupid...Laughable really

Saw the same thing in NYC the other day. Duke played in the Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium and their buses got a police escort down 5th Ave after the game.

I'm not going to disagree with you. However, from a security standpoint, the most vulnerable time for something to happen is when something is stationary. Same reason presidential motorcades don't stop. The bowls and teams are treated as very high security events/targets. Just think worst case scenario...

Same thing happens with any escorted convoy (motorcade). That's how they transition a multi-vehicle convoy through traffic and intersections. It's annoying, but necessary to keep unwanted vehicles out of the convoy (safety).

I was once blocked from passing a slow moving funeral on the interstate for 15 miles. The time it takes a few buses to clear an intersection is nothing compared to the backup caused by that funeral.
