GMT 1675 serial number 2145xxx Dial Lume Issue
GMT 1675 serial number 2145xxx Dial issue, who is the best to restore this one and is there a prayer the color can be closely matched?
This was a 1971 purchase and hasn't been serviced or run for over 11 years. Since the lume plot is missing I assume it is likely inside the watch via the date window. Red GMT hand is pretty cool and I think this one is worthy of restoration, but where to begin? My photos are poor quick shots and the dial is a lighter shade black. Thanks for looking. Ed

I think it is a nice catch based on the price.
Take into consideration a service and relume of the dial/hands to match. Very nice all red hand! |

Is the watch running? If it isn't, prob a good chance that the missing tritium has collected in the date window as you theorized.. scary thought, but worse things have happened to these watches.
You might be able to have the missing plot restored and color matched to your other plots -- but seeing as you have no way of knowing how the missing plot came to be (a dragging hand, or rotting away), there is no way of knowing the integrity of the additional plots. If the hands are any indicator and to be taken seriously, I'd say the tritium is compromised and might as well have the entire dial redone. The all-red hand is a nice touch, although it's my understanding they were supplied on later 70s generations of the 1675 - most Long E's w/ a red hand are service or have been added. Doesn't necessarily matter if it isn't original to the watch though, as many collectors/sellers in the community throw them into the mix for added oomph. The faded insert is a real treat especially alongside the all red hand. Where to start? Send it to a decent joint (ABC Watchworks, is my rec) and have them take a close look at the dial and ask them for there professional advice on the tritium's integrity. You're more than likely looking at a redial and a service - both needing to occur, as they won't do the first without the second. Anyhow, keep us in the loop on how it goes! Quote:

Is that insert black faded, or blue faded?

Love the faded bezel insert. The missing lume plot can be restored by a professional. Good luck.

Ed, Michael Young is very good, but since you're in the states might want to give ABC watchworks a call. They have been known to do great work in matching lume. Outstanding service as well. Keep everything to one shop and still in the US in the event you have a concern.

Thanks for the input and suggestions. I've used MY for bracelets restorations and have been extremely pleased. ABC I can contact with the hope the lume can be repaired without a total restoration of the dial. If anyone has before and after shots of a similar dial issue it would be greatly appreciated. Ed
