refinished auction dials

I am not in the market for one, but very curious about the "refinished with 'Swiss Ink'" dials on a popular auction site.

The dials should be gilt, but are painted. The dials actually look presentable, but make me wonder why they do this. Wouldn't untouched gilt dials with missing plots, cracked finishes, and heavy radium burns be more desirable and valuable?

The refinished dials for 5508, 5512, 5513, and other popular models sell for $20, $60, $250, but I would expect them to bring 100 fold that if left in their original state.

The pictures always include dial backs that look correct. Are these dials of less desirable models that interchange with more desirable subs?

It doesn't make much sense to me. . .am I missing something?

LOL, most if not all of these are totally made in Asia. Even the dial plates imho are brand new and not even used Rolex plates. If the price did not warn you the massive amount of information on this site, VRM etc. will give you pause.

They give me all kinds of pause! Wow, I should have guessed that dial plates would also be reproduced.

Scary to think how many of these things are out there circulating. . .

Anyway one looks at it, they are fake dials. Swiss ink, is another way to market that junk. However, if one is content with a fake dial - let there be light!
