MB Mesterstuck blue hour FP purchase help

Hey all,

So I'm new to the MB world and am looking to make my first purchase. I stopped by the MB boutique to check out the pens and was really smitten by the legrand blue hour FP. Unfortunately, my taste runs $$ as I found out the pen retails for $1500. This is definitely out of my budget. Anyone have any idea of where I can get a good discount on this pen? Guessing that's not possible with such a new model. Best I was able to find was from an authorized online retailer-10%. Appreciate any advice.

Thanks

JP

Try the Fountain Pen Hospital in New York City, best prices around. Also will maintain the ben if it needs a new bladder or piston down the road.

Thanks for the tips. FPH offered $1300. Still out of my budget. Hopefully it'll show on a pen forum soon.

Has anyone ever purchased from international sellers. There's a guy ok eBay from Malaysia with perfect feedback selling sealed pens for a good amount below retail. Stated he could do 950 on the one I'm interested in. I wouldn't go this route, but I'm sure others have.

Smitten! I know that experience.

Just get the pen.

My Compliments!

Try Bryan at Chatterly pens. He may be able to help. It looks like he's out of stock right now, but do not let that dissuade you. He may be able to get you a new or pre-owned.

It looks like the legrand may not be in the cards. What do people think of the solitaire classique? It's a handsome pen and $500 cheaper. I've never used this "thinner" model.

Before blasting $1,500 on a pen that you're both not sure you can live with and you're not sure you'll use regularly (let's be real here, not many folk use a FP day in day out), you might want to try picking up a similar sized MB FP second hand. Give it a few months and see how you get on with it and how much use you get out of it. If you're getting some mileage from it and you're still lusting after the Blue Hour, then you can make an informed choice. You might even find a few have filtered onto the used market by then, too.

Personally, I have several MB writing instruments, including two fountain pens. My FPs get used once in a blue moon, purely to sign a report that's going to court. As for my ballpoints, fine liners and pencils, well, they get used all day five to six days a week.

You might want to consider a ballpoint or pencil as your first purchase. Depending on your line of work, they could be far more versatile as well as a lot cheaper.

Personally, I prefer the smaller sized fountain pens and use smaller Nibs(Extra-fine)as well. But I am a short adult male and have small hands and these FP's work great for me…..

But as Ruud Van Driver stated above, go to a MontBlanc Boutique and 'Test Drive' one of these smaller sizes first. This way you can see if they will work for your specific needs!!!

MB also do a Blue Hour ballpoint. It's half the price of the FP, which is likely to be closer to what you want to pay and you'll probably get more mileage out of it. From a little research, I've also seen the JFK Special Edition ballpoint; smart pen and again, half the price of the Blue Hour FP.

I just reread your post and why would you be settling(because it costs less money???)for a pen you really do not want? Why not save up a little more cash and get the one you really want…this way you will be happier. Otherwise you may always feel like you 'settled' for second best. And every time you use the FP you will wish you had bought the one you really liked!!!

Good luck and take care…..Leo

I have to agree with Leo. Every time I settle on something, when for a little bit more I could have had what I wanted I have regretted it.

Bought a new Solitaire Doue' Signum when I know I like the larger i.e.: 146 size pens because it was so pretty and a little cheaper. Now after a couple of weeks I had to admit my handwriting suffered with the Classique site pen.

I have a Blue Hour LeGrand on the way now, and someone is going to get a heck of a deal on a like new Solitaire Doue at my expense.

Thanks for the advice guys. Perhaps I'm just not in the mindset to break the $1k mark on a pen. I'm going to head back to the boutique to see it again and test out different nibs. Maybe that will inspire me to plunk down the $$ or wait for 2nd hand options to come up.

Try the pens if you can. If not settle on what you really want.

I have so many Montblancs that I enjoy. 149s 146s, 144s, 142s, ............. Oh my! They are all lovely and worthy of our acceptance.

You will never be sorry if you acquire them at a reasonable price. Which is not hard to do.

My best and sincerest wishes!

Richard
