WHY NO PEARL ON GMTs?
I apologize if it has been asked before. As I'm wearing my BLNR tonite and looking at the bezel I thought, why doesn't it have a pearl at the 24?
As knowledgable as members are on the forum, I'm sure someone will know. Thanks in advance for the response(s).

It's a bit inconsistent that the 24-hour hand has lume, but the GMT bezel does not.
Unless the 24-hour hand is synchronized to the main hour hand, the lume on the 24-hour hand isn't really useful. |

That's one of the reasons I asked. Also considering there's no way to reference a second or third time zone in the dark.

![]() Of course there is. With a GMT Master II you don't need the bezel numbers (or offset) to tell time in a 2nd time zone using the 24 hr hand because it's set independently. After it's set, the time is read straight off the dial just like using the hour and minute hands, except in a 24 hour clock format using the 24 hr and minute hands. The bezel comes into play if you want to display a 3rd time zone. I assume you don't need actual arabic numerals to tell time (day or night) using the lumed hour and minute hands pointing at the dial plots, you know what each represents. So what's the problem with doing the same thing in the dark using the lume of the 24 hr hand in relation to the lume of the plots? 1 dial plot = 2 hours for a hand that's sweeping around the dial only once per day, so with it pointing at the 1 o'clock plot = 0200. Halfway between 4 and 5 o'clock plots = 0900. 10 o'clock plot = 2000, etc. The reason the lumed triangle is out near the edge is to more easily see at a glance where it's pointing. The GMT bezel doesn't have a pearl because it' a pilot's watch, not a diver's watch. There's no need for bivalve shellfish embellishments. |

Exactly, Rolex watches are designed for the intended use. GMT is a pilot's watch. Maybe not that dark in the cockpit so that you need lume?

In a sub the pearl marks the count down termination of the 15 minute air supply timer and needs to be seen at depth. No need for that function on a GMT.

Same reason, because its not a divers watch......
Now riddle me this.... And assuming we can agree on the answer to the initial question..... If peals keep falling off Subs (do to normal use) why doesnt Rolex offer a virtual pearl of some sort, maybe inbedded on the bezzel for instance? Has this been raised in the past to some extent? Do I dare? It sounds like there should be a change in design.... Is it to iconic to Meddle with? Discuss... |
