The lowly pencil...! Not so much!!!
Well and ... so!
We all typically love our fountain pens, but very few ever expound about the virtues of the lowly and humble pencil. I have a couple of pencils that are literally worthy of mention and I have to say they are a pleasure to write with. The first is a Montblanc 172 Green Striated Repeater that is part of a set of original 1955 Montblancs that generally cause me to salivate. I truly wish they would take the time to create pencils like this today. And then there is the Faber Perfect Pencil. I have two of these. One is the original solid Sterling model and the other is the Platinum plated with the built in pencil sharpener. If you have never written with a Faber Castell pencil, you are truly and actually missing out. These are not the pencils you used in elementary class. TOTALLY different. Incredible and and joy to write or draw with. If you want to give these a try, you can get a nice version of this pencil in plastic with a sharpener for about $12.00 on Amazon. You won't regret it. ![]() ![]() And then there are the Parker Duofold Pencils! Wow!!! I have acquired a couple of these and I have to say they are the epitome of what a pencil should be. ![]() Even the vintage pencils are just superb! ![]() I have this one and it works and writes as well as it did 75 years ago. And of course there are myriad of Montblanc pencils that seem to add themselves to my collection, but yet I relish! ![]() And the Agatha Christie which is second to none! ![]() So... Anyone else like the lead? ![]()

Wow Richard, those mechanical pencils you own are really nice. I have always enjoyed using mechanical pencils for school work many years(decades)ago. Today I still use them and my favorite ones are those of my Dad's Drafting Pencils(I believe they are from the 1940's or 1950's) which use the 2mm lead refills…..

These were made by MontBlanc and were a limited series a few years ago…check on Ebay or Pen Forums such as the Fountain Pen Network in their For Sale Section!!!

I am not an artist, but I find myself drawing in my journal with the Faber Perfect Pencil. But that's okay. At least I think it is.
Must be a disease of some kind ?!!? I can assure you that if you give the Graf von Faber Castell pencil a try, you will most certainly enjoy the experience! They are about $10.00 a pencil. And worth every cent! But you can have a $ experience here. http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B000KT8RS...perfect+pencil I have sharpened mine twice!

if you want a regular No.#2 pencil(HB) that has very good quality then look at the Ticonderoga brand. Now if you want an excellent regular pencil then look into the Blackwing #602 which are made by Palomino. One source for the Blackwing #602 can be bought through Kaufmann Merchantile…..

On my desk I have.....a 90th anniversary Montblanc 149, a Montblanc Starwalker Fineliner, a Montblanc 164 ballpoint and a Montblanc 165 .7mm pencil. The pencil ALWAYS gets used the other 3 never get touched. Sometimes I'll uncap the 149 if I'm signing a contract LOL
I absolutely adore writing with a pencil. |

Guys,
The Agatha Christie pencil is about 20 years out of date for an acquisition. Ebay is your friend if you want to acquire an example. Other than that..... Let us all know how it goes. They are just a really SUPERB pencil.

The 172 striated is very nice, good looking bunch Richard. FPH has a MB hard rubber #50 from 1930 in the vintage room for not a bad price...
