Most of the nicknames make my flesh crawl and some of the ones suggested for the new models after Basel 2015 and 2016 were downright absurd.

In fact, if I see another dumb suggestion for a ridiculous name bestowed upon what is an icon of horology, I shall puke my balls out of my mouth.

Thank you and goodnight.

I think nicknames are important actually on a public forum. They make the watches more easily recognisable and accessible to newer members, many of whom would be intimidated and confused by the long ref numbers. We already belong to a pretty elite club, if we are being honest, and nicknames make us seem less aloof and more friendly.

News Flash. The nickname crowd will never convince the no-nickname crowd and vice versa so why not just co-exist and end the silly banter which often turns ugly.

Here's a good analogy. When I am on the phone with someone who is chewing food while speaking it makes me cringe. That's just me. My wife of 26 years says it does not bother her. Different folks have different tolerances.

My take on the whole issue is that historically SOME Rolex have developed nicknames that have come to be accepted. Presidential, Newman, Coke and Pepsi come to mind. Now, it seems that every new piece HAS to have a nickname and that becomes tiresome and obnoxious. It really does not serve to demean or lessen the brand in the 'real world" IMHO but is more of an irritant to some, myself included. This after all is a forum of adults, right?

My Local AD asked me specifically if I knew what the LV Sub and BLNR where called. So even the AD's know and use the nicknames.

Well I agree with Rolex..., the names are silly..... When I look at my Rolex I feel proud to see the time on a Rolex. I always know the time is accurate when Micky's big hand points to the 12, and Micky's little hand points to the hour Ah well that didn't last long

there's no harm in these mindless 'name game' trivialities...Rolex nicknames are simply a way for watch enthusiasts to convey & express their passion for everything/anything Rolex related.

while it would be easy to condemn or define it as a 'newbie' mentality, the practice has been around for ages. there is no record of Steve McQueen having ever worn an Explorer 1655 & yet this 45+ year-old model still bears a questionable moniker...even the terms 'orange-hand' & freccionne border on stupid but to each his/her own.

at best, consider the nicknames as terms of endearment...just another way for Rolex owners to relate.

The funny thing to me is - why make up names for watches that Rolex already gave names to?

But I don't care whether people use nicknames or not. Either way we're still talking about watches, which I enjoy.

I am reminded of the 1964 song by
Shirley Ellis, "The Name Game".

And Shakespeare's "What's in a Name".

It's just a watch folks.

I'm glad my SD doesn't have a nickname. The last years I've seen the BLNR term used and finally had to look the name up on Alta Vista. I seriously thought it stood for "Blue 'n Red".

I saw one UK dealer refer to a watch as the "Bart Simpson".

bottomline.....for better or worse...Rolex is also known as a 'rollie'

dont shoot the messenger

this term has been coined by a very affluent 'crowd' that loves their 'bling'

rolex is quality without the 'class' of AP, PP or VC.....it just is....

It's no big deal to me.
Do these nicknames even exist outside the realm of TRF, also known as the real world?
