Servicing a rolex

Hi,

I would like to get my watch serviced but am unsure of the specifics. For example, do I bring it in to a certified dealer to have it serviced? Do they usually service it on sight or send it out? I would like a basic service of the internals, but nothing else. I don't want it polished or the dial or hands replaced or bezel. How much does this usually cost? Thanks

Contact your closest RSC and they will send you a package with instructions. Or, take your watch to a Rolex authorized dealer and have them handle it for you. I would go with the former.

A authorized dealer can do it if they have a Rolex cert. Watch maker on staff. Cost depends on the model and what parts need replacing. 750$ is a good ballpark.

You could take it to your local AD or send it off to RSC.
A basic service will cost you in the range of $650 but that entirely depends on what needs to be done.

Is it keeping good time?

How old is the watch?

It's from 1970. It doesn't run. I think it's the mainspring since it doesn't wind. Has anyone had experience with the watch buyers group in California for servicing?

Use abc if you're in SoCal, or the Rolex affiliate in SF if you're in NorCal. I've had good work done by both.

For an older reference don't use an RSC or AD but go to an independent watchmaker. Some really good ones around on TRF. Just use the search function.
They have more respect for originality, official RSC will make your watch factory new, but with a bit of bad luck change the dial and hands as well.
That's the last thing you want on a classic

That exactly when you don't want an RSC touching it. They are a production line, you need a craftsman (person).

Norm Basch at Basch's in North Olmsted Ohio does a great job and will abide by your request. He has serviced a 1680 Sub of mine twice, once when I bought it and again right before I sold it. Both times I had him do no case refinishing and requested no change of hands. The watch came back looking exactly as it did when I dropped it off except it was running spot on and had a two year warranty!

Not exactly a 10 minute walk, but MI is closer than CA:
http://www.dominiquewieland.com/

I've used Dom many times, as have many people I know. He does great vintage work and his prices are less than you would expect. Contact him and ask for his work experience - you will be blown away.

Send it to Rik Dietel in Florida. Time Care Inc. He has a Rolex parts account and works on older pieces as well as newer. RSC is a bad choice for such an old watch, don't do it.

If you're in Connecticut, consider dropping it by the RSC NY yourself. It's on 5th Ave. Request a movement-only service with no polish and you'll be good to go. What's the watch in question?

I highly recommend going with ABC Watchwerks in Los Angeles. Just got my dad's watch back from a full restoration and they did a superb job.

Interesting. Some people say RSC and some say don't do it. What should I expect to pay for a movement only service ~ 500? One place offered a service for about 125 which I was pretty surprised at. Didn't think that was on the up and up

The RSC will be more than $500, way more if your watch is over 30 years old.

ABCwatchwerks is 495 plus warranty...you can call them up and they will tell you how you can ship it there...turn around time is about 6 weeks...

Ah good point, if it's over 30 years old the movement-only service starts at $900 now (got a quote from NY last year on a '66 5700 they'd previously serviced for $600). Not the most cost-effective option, but they're far more conscious of vintage value than in days past.

Not accepting work, for at least the next two months - too much backlog. I just called today.
