It is to differentiate it from the WG model. You used to be able to get the WG with both smooth and fluted. About 2 or 3 years ago the smooth option was killed off. The only reason for doing so as far as I can see is so that the only white metal DD with a smooth bezel is the platinum. The ice blue dial also serves the same function but not everyone who goes for the platinum model goes for that dial.

platinum is used in medical equipment which peoples lives depend on, along with other usage which all require precise engineering

so im sure it is possible to make a platinum watch bezel

Somewhere in Geneva, In a pure white, utterly sterile, room, deep in the ground, there sits a guy in a white coat. With paper and pencil. His job is to work out the most frustrating range of combinations for every Rolex model.
He gets a bonus for every thread complaining about the combinations you want and can't buy. The Swiss view this as compensation for all the jokes about cookoo clocks and Toblerone.

I would love the fluted bezel in platinum, but is it ok to be strongly in favor of something I can't afford?

My guess is a fluted Pt bezel can be done. But as usual, Rolex keeps us wishing for things that don't exist.

Platona is double the price of the RG. I Imagine the DD40s are the same, I'm too scared to look them up , and if they fluted the bezel the delicate work involved would drive the price up even further and a few ADs have told me they would just become too tough a sell at those levels esp up against complicated PPs and the like. Historically platinum prices have been higher and the rarity of the metal made it more treasured but if the price trend continues below gold's there will be a shift in consumer's attitudes. Rich people expect to pay a premium for rarity and exclusivity, altho they also want the most stuff for free I find, but no one wants to feel they are being played. It will be interesting to see how platinums are priced in future across all the brands.

As a jeweler and an AD, The bezel isn't cast because it needs a certain temper to hold the crystal gasket and crystal. It needs to be forged and machined. Platinum is not harder than gold, except pure, it's different, and it depends on how it's alloyed. It resists wear, it doesn't take as high of polish as gold, and has no memory (spring back). It much harder to machine and wouldn't be as shiny. I think it might be possible to flute it, however, if you look at how many platinum watches are sold in a year, how many would Rolex sell, and what would it cost to create a decent one, I don't think it makes sense economically. I think it could look like the old engine turned bezel in stainless easily. Years ago, Rolex said it was too difficult to make a fluted bezel in platinum. They might be able to do it today, but would the cost make sense compared to sales?

Not just blue dial YM my friend. The platinum dial 116622 and 16622 ym also has a platinum bezel...

the only ones that aren't platinum are TT, Gold, and the YMII models with bezels that are ceramic.
