Datejust II or Milgauss?

The DJ2 is 41mm and regardless of any case 'refinement' with the new version the difference will be barely visible.

OP, go with the 116300 - I have that exact watch and combo. Is the best version of the DJ2 in my opinion.

The new datejust 41 will appear significantly less bloated than the current datejust 2. Rolex did not overhaul their most popular watch line for a barely visible change. It is being downsized significantly. And yes, you can significantly downsize a watch while keeping it at 41mm. In my opinion the dj2 looks a bit big on your wrist and the milgauss looks much better proportioned. In the end, go with what you like most. But if your asking for our opinions i am going to give mine.

I've had that dj2 silver stick I got board quickly and lost heaps selling it

Get the milgauss - Imo it screams rolex less as it has no cyclops
Also it's slightly chunkier - the crown is bigger and less fiddly to use
If it's only occasionally worn u don't have to set the date
You can also get them preowned and cheaper

It's not me that's asking for your opinion! I'm not the OP, and it ain't my wrist, I'm simply responding.

Tell me how you can downsize a watch but keep the case 'diameter' the same??

41, is is the overall case diameter on both pieces. I understand that the bezel and the dial itself may have changed somewhat, perhaps even the depth of the case itself, even an overall refinement, but let me reiterate - it is 41 and therefore if the lugs overhang or look big on this guy, it will be the same as the new DJ41, regardless of the makeup of the cosmetics of the watch.

Diameter, is diameter.

The Milgauss is a great piece. The only thing I would consider from personal experience is make sure you buy it well. My taste is watches is drastically different at 33 than it was when I was your age.

Not saying you'll lose interest in it later since it's awesome and fairly conservative, tying up a lot of money in pieces you like now, at least consider it.

I've owned both, and sold both (116300 with black dial & romans, and Milgauss Green with black dial). I only every once think about reacquiring the Milgauss. So the Milgauss would be my choice of the two, and I'd feel comfortable wearing it, even over 40 years of age.

I would go with the Milgauss, you don't see as many and I like the looks a bit more.

Hi guys, thanks for the replies! I managed to see a family member's DJII and you guys are entirely correct when you state the Cyclops is a 'Rolex' give away! From a distance I could tell it was a Rolex, so I will be avoiding that! The later comments on the case size and shape are correct - the 41mm case is large (around 49-50mm lug to lug!) and the shape makes it all that more large on the wrist. It doesn't look as refined as the Milgauss.

I will go into an AD in the next week or so if I get time and see them in the flesh!

Both are winners IMHO. Get the one that makes you smile when you're looking at it.

I went through the same dilemma. Ultimately I would have gone with Milgauss because...

1) DJII is too large. The 1mm difference is very obvious. Milgauss is more proportional and looks perfect on the wrist.

2) The date window is too small on the DJII. Doesn't look right with such a large dial and case. Compare it with the DJ and sub/GMT that are 36mm and you'll know what I mean.

I was making a very similar choice a few years ago. Have you tried on the milgauss? I thought I would love it from the pictures, but just didn't connect with all the orange once on the wrist. I never was really a fan of the cyclops, which is why I was leaning towards a milgauss, so I ended up with the GV.

If I were making the choice again, I'd probably end up with the Milguass Blue.

Just given your two choices, I actually think I'd prefer the DJ over the white dialed Milgauss.

A 1019 Milgauss from the 1970s is worth far, far more than a Datejust from the same era. A reference 6541 Milgauss from the 1950s (which features the detested lightning bolt hand) is worth six-figures in today's money. The Milgauss is probably more collectible, rare and unique than a Datejust.

I love the DJII and it'll probably be my next purchase, but for most DJII models I prefer the fluted bezel.

If you're looking for understated, I would stay w/ the smooth bezel DJIIs..

I own a white dial Milgauss 116400 and it's not necessarily an "understated" watch the way many people claim. In the flesh it's much more flashy and blingy than Internet pictures would lead you to think. I purchased the Milgauss w/ the intention of having an heirloom piece to hand down to my son, and the bling doesn't necessarily bother me, which is to say I purchased it for my own idiosyncratic reasons. Despite my preference for the Milgauss, the DJII is probably more iconic and might be better first-purchase for most buyers, unless you have a strong reason to prefer the Milgauss.

This is exactly why I want to snatch up a couple DJIIs while they're still available in their current size.

For most DJIIs I agree, I think they're slightly bloated-looking and disproportionate, but I still think the 116333 w/ green romans and the 116334 with blue sticks just works really, really well. I like the DJII w/ blue romans as well, but not quite so much as the other two.

Reading through this thread, I agree.. I think the DJII cyclops and winding crown are slightly off-proportion. The Milgauss, on the other hand, if you can get past the quirky lightning bolt, is proportioned almost perfectly.

It's worth noting too that the Milgauss wears pretty heavy due to the Faraday cage, probably much moreso than a DJII.

Of those two dial choices I would pick the DJ II, as I really like the simplicity of the dial.

Milgauss by a long way - but I'd go with one of the GV variants rather than the white dial

How about the OP 116000 ( here is the 36mm on my 6.75" wrist). Looks close to the DJ you like without the cyclops.

The DJ2 can be had without the cyclops. Request the AD or an independent watchmaker to remove it or replace the crystal with another Rolex model (Daytona?). Problem solved.

Btw, for me the DJ2 was a long time coming. I started with the 36mm tt Thunderbird in 1990 and after many years the watch just felt smaller and I'd always wished Rolex would make a larger DJ. And when they came out with the 41mm case I had to have it and it will stay in my collection for good. The DJ2 is perfect in all aspects in my book- size, look, prominence, style.

Try them both on before deciding. The Milgauss wears a bit thicker. It may be a consideration.

Between the 2, Milgauss would be my choice. Not saying that your age should dictate the watch you wear (to some extent, of course), but will probably suit you better than the OP.

DJII is a great watch, DGMW, but as people have already mentioned, it's presence + the Cyclops is a dead giveaway that it's a Rolex.

Good luck on your search, and post lotsa pics when u do make that decision.
