Inherited watches

I thought it would be interesting to see how many members have watches that have been passed down from either your grand parents or parents that you remember fondly growing up.

I will start with mine. My Dad gave me his Gallet Flying Officer Chronograph that he wore back in the 60's. This is the watch that started it all for me. As a kid I played with the chronograph and my dad tought me how to use the world time bezel. I always coveted this watch and from my interest in it, I became a watch nut at an early age.

Would love to hear similar stories.

The watch-

I have the watch my mom gave my dad for Christmas the first year they were married, in 1949. It was five years old when she bought it from the dentist she worked for. It runs great and keeps excellent time.
A Lord Elgin tank watch. Had it completely reconditioned a few years ago and the dial repainted. The guy charged me $30 bucks, that's right, $30.00 and that included a new real lizard skin strap! I'll see if I can find a picture or take a new one or two. I bought a croc strap for it but have not worn it with then new strap yet.

I posted a pic of this one the other day in another thread. This is the Seiko my Dad wore in Vietnam. He told me an explosion concussion blew it off his wrist once. It is on its third or fourth bracelet, the second that I can recall, just a Timex he took off another watch. This was his everyday "beater" for many years.

This looked like the coolest watch in the world to me when I was a little kid, and it brings back fond memories. I also have two 50s vintage Bulova tank watches and a Hamilton that belonged to Dad. He passed on his appreciation for good watches to me.

This watch belonged to my great grandfather David Oskar Gustavsson. I don't know so much about him, but he was born 1879 and he died 1928.

The watch is not so accurate but it still works.

I have three inherited watches. I have a gold Hamilton tank from my dad which he received from his parents when he graduated from HS, or maybe Marquette in 1947. Also from pop is a mid 1950's SS Benrus wristalarm. From his dad I received a "Waldman" dress watch. It's a very inexpensive watch which was sold in Sears, and Penneys years ago. I recently had it completely overhauled (it hadn't ran in 30 years) at a cost of about
four times the original selling price I'm sure. At least I can wear it now, and it looks surprisingly nice.

Great stories. . I know many of us own and swap, flip and go on to the next watch, but we cherish the ones our parents and grandparents owned and would never consider selling.

About 9 years ago I had my fathers watch bezel numbers painted back in, there was another collector there and he offered me $900 for it. I promply told him no.

I told my dad about that and he said you should of sold it, I only paid $250 for it in the early sixties. When I think about it, $250 in the 60's was a lot of money for a watch. I do not think I could ever sell it.

This is one instance being a Rolex does not matter at all.

I inherited my dad's explorer II. He bought it for $850 dollars in 1978 from our family's jeweler at the time.

I recieved this PP after the death of a great uncle. Not my pics and not my watch but it was exactly the same. Didn't have a digi camera back then.

Some great looking watches! Love Dan's PP and the old Omega Pocket Watch. And that Gallet Chrono is a classic (though does look like the hands could use a good restoration/refinishing)
