Watch Winder Questions for Perpetual Calendar

Is there any reason not to keep my new 5140 perpetual calendar on a winder when not on the wrist? I have a small, rechargeable Wolf winder (fits in my safe) that has on and off cycles, so it's not constantly turning. A related question: This winder has both clockwise and counter-clockwise cycles, and can't be programmed to turn just one direction. I think I read that the Calibre 240Q movement only winds clockwise. Is that correct, and is there any problem if the winder alternates in both directions?

Your winder should be fine to use. I use one so I can grab a watch and go. I wind all mine CW and CCW and have no problems.

Thanks for the advice. I've used winders on less important pieces without thought, but, of course, my first Patek is special!

** bump to a 14month old post **

I almost pulled the trigger on an Orbita Rotorwind watch winder. However, given that Patek watches mostly wind in a single direction, is a programmable system better? I like the idea of the watch moving both CW and CCW - just like the wrist would. However, I also want to avoid unnecessary wear and tear. Anyone have experience with a Rotorwind system and Patek watches?

I programed my Orbita to turn CCW for PP. I don't own a perpetual calendar. I hardly ever use the winder on my AC.

Cant see it making a huge difference on wear & tear. My view and I am always happy to be proven wrong is that PP is CCW 800 TPD. Therefore it will need to turn CCW 800 times per day to be fully wound. On a CCW & CW setting it will need to be set on a higher revolution per day as the CW is not actually winding up something. So I would guess 1600 TPD which would be 800 CW and 800 CCW. Probably more wear & tear if anything!

The rotorwind system from Orbita is not programmable. All it does is that every 10 mins it'll turn the watch by 180degrees and then release the watch. Using gravity the watch then oscillates back and forth. That provides CW and CCW winding. Demo: https://youtu.be/OryqUbaJusY

I guess I can just a programmable option then and set it to 800 CCW TPD.

ah ah the same system it uses for their safe models...too complicated for me!

Agree with everything Karl's said.

Probably safest is a programable winder set at 800 CCW. For less than $200 Wolf makes a great one. A small investment when compared to the cost of the timepiece!

Current model PCs come with a winder box so I am not sure if a separate winder is necessary. But whether to use a winder or not on any automatic watch is pure personal preference.
